D2 coilovers
Thoughts on this suspension system? A little over $1,000 including shipping on eBay

Not looking to bash someone's product, but you did ask for opinions. expect damping "lines", not damping "curves" if you ever put them on a shock dyno. Expect springs of irregular resistances levels, and expect each shock to dyno a little differently. And "adjustment knobs" that don't really do anything.
I suspect they took a generic damper from another chassis and put it into a jig for the FRS. (bad as it wasn't designed with the motion ratios or weight of the FR-S) valving is likely not specific for this car, and is cheap valving anyway. If you are looking for improved performance don't buy these. If you are looking to be able to lower your car, then these are an ok option i guess. If you want to be lower with some performance increase on a budget, maybe put some lowering springs on the stock dampers. The stock dampers are actually pretty good, and you'll save money. Matt

Generic slap-on suspension. Fine if you have a street car and just want to lower it.

I've ran these shocks on a dyno, and they're pretty good for the money. Don't expect Bilstein performance, but for that price they're not bad. Digressive curves, damper adjustment knobs actually do something, and each damper was within 5% of each other which is pretty much the industry standard for mass produced shocks afaik. I haven't ran the FR-S shocks on a dyno, but I've ran several other D2 shocks on a Roehrig 2VS. <5ips looked good; >5ips was decent. These shocks have done well at the national time attack level.
I wouldn't put them on my FR-S, but if we were talking about a 20 yr old 240SX or Civic that's got stock suspension, sure. The bushings, damper internals, and springs are all still in great shape on your car. KW would be a great choice, if you can afford them. If not, then D2, BC Racing, or Megan racing would be fine. Fortune Auto would be my choice in the $1000 range though. |

Waiting for HSD to have an application for the FR-S. They routinely impress me.

I have a set of these D2s on the way from the factory... should be here in about a week. I wanted to try them out before I mounted my KWs on the car. I just want a better stance without a totally screwed ride, and if the D2 can deliver that then I don't want to spend double on the KWs. I will do a full writeup once the coils show up.
By the way, the seller on eBay does NOT have those coilovers in stock and when I talked to them about buying, they told me that it would be weeks, possibly, before the were even shipped to them. I HATE when eBay sellers create auctions for items they don't have and it is against eBay policy. Grrrr.

D2 coilovers may be worse than stock ones.
I just guess, because I have used D2 before, and didn't feel good. |
