Oil Filter Stuck
Oil filter is stuck. I've always hand tightened my oil filter on all my previous oil changes and never had oil filter stuck and can't get it off. I've spent 2 hours trying to get it off with bare hands and then elastic bands around the filter to get more grip.
I've tried turning it when the car is warm and cold and still won't budge. It's somehow stuck so tight, which is weird because it doesn't feel like hand tight anymore. I'm not sure if it's because it's a Toyota brand oem filter as the Toyota dealership where I get my oil change parts switched from Subaru to Toyota oil filters. Any recommendation to remove this stuck filter? I think I might have to resort to using oil filter wrench, hoping it won't leave a mess. |

Stab a long screw driver through the filter and turn. It might get a bit messy though.

There are many good oil filter wrenches out there of varying styles, most of which are non-destructive (i.e. strap, cap, band, etc.) but for God's sake, do not use the 'ol screwdriver method. Once you damage the filter, you're stuck until you can get it off.
Worst case, leave the old filter in tact, replace the oil anyway and take it to a good shop.

I have found that grabbing them with sandpaper in your palm will often work if grip is the problem.
I also have about three different oil filter wrenches that wont fit my other cars, but this one is practically waving in the wind. |

I use the oil filter caps, but also have a oil filter strap tool and one of the 3 pronged tools that pinch closed as you turn it. Have never failed to remove a filter with any of those 3.

I use my leather belt. Wrap it around the filter so the buckle cinches it tighter in the direction you want to go, then you can wrap the belt further, or connect something to the belt and remove your filter.

This type of oil filter remover has never failed me. Squeeze/grip it hard enough so that the filter dents in a bit:

3 pronged claw oil filter wrench is what you need - comes off in a second with a snap on 1/2 socket wrench !

I had the same problem today. Didn't have a lot of homemade solutions.
I ended up taking out the intake box to get more clearance and leverage and was able to twist it off by hand. |

this may sound weird, but turn it in the direction to tighten it, then try to loosen it. It has worked for me in the past.
