[Question/Discussion] Dimming LED DRL/high-beam

I'm interested in picking up LEDs to replace my FR-S DRL but do not want to lose high beam functionality. I can drop in a powerful low-beam LED but it will be too bright for use as a DRL for that period between when the sun starts to set and when the automatic headlights makes the switch to low beams.

Is there a way to have the LED DRLs dim?

You would need a voltage regulated PWM
the drl is made so by lowering the voltage to the lamp. LEDs only have 2 states, on or off, they don't do in the middle well. However LEDs can be switched on and off very very mind blowingly quickly, which allows them to be 'dimmed.' the device that does this is called a pulse width modulator. what you would need is a device that takes full 12v, and signal from the DRL\Highbeam circuit, and outputs 50% duty cycle or so for DRL functionality, and 100% duty cycle for high beam.

Even the powerful LEDs for headlights aren't anywhere near as bright as halogens so...
