still the 4A-GE would be a best candidate to be the heart of the FT86 make a more improvement to have a more grunt out of a 1.6 or maybe a 3S-GE.

The way that Toyota the FT-86 is like they only resurrect the "AE86 LEVIN", cause the AE86 TRUENO came with a pop-up lights...maybe Toyota should have this 2 variants so customers will have something...
