Official Limited Edition TRD86.

This journal is about one of two Toyota 86's that I own. It started off life as a base model 86 with small brakes and 16" wheels. This is a RHD 6 speed manual.

Toyota NZ released a TRD spec version, which takes either a standard base model 86 or the higher spec GT86 and then they convert it into an official limited edition TRD86.

They planed to only make 20 of them. In reality, they only produced a total of 9 before the spec was withdrawn. I therefore own a very rare and special 86 which happens to be TRD001. The first one produced in the country.

Here is the base model, unmodified:

The following TRD items are then added:

1) Front spoiler.
2) side skirts
3) Rear spoiler
4) boot spoiler
5) TRD BBK (Brembo) 6 pot front and 4 pot rear complete with large slotted rotors
all round.
6) TRD quad tipped high response muffler with air stabiliser.
7) TRD 18" x 7.5" lightweight forged wheels.
8) Michelin 225/40/18 sport pilot 3 tyres.
9) TRD oil filler cap
10) TRD high pressure radiator cap.
11) TRD oil filter.
12) TRD sports air filter.

The car is then individually numbered and issued with a certificate of authenticity.

I my case, it went a little further. One of the cars that inspired the development of the 86 was the Toyota 2000 GT from the 1960's, shown here.




The livery was reproduced on my TRD86 as a tribute to it's sporting heritage.





Since I have owned it, I have added the following:

1) Xforce exhaust headers.

2) ECUTEK Tuning, which added 20WHP on the dyno, just with the header
change.

The tune also added the following features:

a) Launch Control
b) Auto downshift blipping. As this is a 6 speed manual, I don't have to
heel and toe when at the track.
c) Flat foot shifting.
d) 0 to 100kmh time in seconds using the OEM fuel consumption
display.

There a 4 selectable maps controlled by the cruise control stick so
you can
choose/select the features you want to use or turn them off.

Very cool!

3) Cusco front strut tower bar with built in brake master cylinder stopper.
4) Oil cooler
5) Perrin intake pipe which also deletes the stupid sound generator hoses.
6) Grimmspeed gas hood struts.
7) Full headlight assembly change to upgrade headlights from halogen to
HID and LED DRL's.
8) TWS 18x8.5" lightweight forged T66F wheels in gunmetal grey and
235/40/18 tyres.
9) TRD fully adjustable (height and 40 way dampening) suspension.
10) Cusco front and rear sway bars.
11) TRD underbody brace set
12) GT86 speedo cluster including digital speedo. Only had analogue
speedo before.
13) TRD sports gauges. Cluster of 3. Water temp/Oil pressure/Oil temp
14) LSD final drive upgraded to 4.55 ratio for better acceleration in lower gears.
15) Motorsport approved seat mounted fire extinguisher.
16) Centre console illuminated 86 logo.
17) 4 cluster LED glove box light.
18) LED boot light and number plate lights
19) Personalised licence plate.
20) Car has also been personally signed by Japan's Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada.


So a mix of performance upgrades and some things just for looks as it is still road legal and not just for track work.


There might be a couple of things I've forgotten as this has all happened over the last two years and I'm working from memory.

I will include a few pictures of some of the parts mentioned above.










I don't have any plans to do anything else with it by way of upgrades, although I have toyed with the idea of fitting a Bullet (Sprintex) Supercharger. Can't see it ever happening, but never say "NEVER" eh?

I also own a GT86 which I bought first and is my daily drive. This one is pretty much stock apart from looks. It has the full TRD body kit TRD SF2 wheels (pinched off my TRD86) and High response muffler.

I feel like I'll be spending A LOT of time in this thread. Beautiful car man and I want to ask a few questions;

Where do you get/how did you make the illuminated TRD Center Console?

Also want to ask your opinions of the TRD adjustable suspension set and how well it might hold out compared to some aftermarket options.

Also, did your car come with the TRD (carbon fiber) strut tower member brace? If so why did you switch to the Cusco? If there was none why not have the TRD over the Cusco?


With all that said, love the car and love the livery. Definately a 1 of a kind 86.

I'm digging the plain white GT86. I love the TRD bodykit, especially in white. Maybe I'm partial to the color. Either way, that livery is wicked. Hopefully more will come!

The illuminated 86 logo I bought from Diode Dynamics in the USA. Just checked their site and they don't seem to list it anymore. They were only about US$25.00 each plus freight, so I bought 3. Two red ones and one blue one, because I didn't know which colour I wanted to use. It comes with the controller and wiring. It comes on when you turn on your lights. Maybe if you email them these pictures they might be able to help you. The TRD is just a white vinyl sticker I put on it.

The car did not come with a TRD strut tower bar. A couple of our club members have got the TRD ones and both had bends in them. I didn't like that. Plus the Cusco one is cheaper than the TRD. The Cusco looks way better in my opinion and the best thing is the Cusco also comes with a master brake cylinder stopper built in to it. This stops the firewall flexing under hard braking.

I haven't had any other car with adjustable suspension so I can't make a comparison against other brands. All I can tell you is they are actually made by a company called progressive which I'm told makes quality product. With the suspension set on it's softest setting it feels much like OEM. When set harder, there is a noticable improvement on track. Currently the height is set about 20mm lower than stock. The only downside is they don't really go much lower. However I think 20mm is good for handling and ride comfort.

It's a great handling car and still heaps of fun to drive whether it's on road or track.

You are not alone in your thoughts. I drive both cars on the road and when people see "33" they just see race car.

When I drive the GT86 I get more thumbs up and nice comments. I think the GT86 has more street appeal and people see it as something more normal to drive.

Have some other bits on the shelf I bought ages ago, but never fitted.

A Perrin lightweight crank pulley. Got worried when I saw the sticky post on fitting these. Like how the internal key can not engage properly, although it seems otners have not had any problems. Luck of the draw?? Don't know.

Then there are the whiteline camber bolts. Probably had those about 8 months and still in the bag Hahaha.

Yeah I know what you mean. it's the only car I have owned that didn't have a light in there. Hell an extra bulb on the assembly line can't be that expensive Toyota!!!

Did this some time ago and produced a DIY on this forum. However I didn't explain it very well, so I will redo it to make it clearer. Will do this over the next couple of days and post it in the DIY section. When I do I will post a link for you here.

There's one other thing I've done. I have found the buttons on our key fob are easily activated while in your pocket. I do this all the time. I sit down at home and the boot button gets pushed. The transmitter range is very good. Even with the car locked in the garage. I will go out in the morning and find the car battery if flat because the boot light has been on all night drawinfg 370mA !!

I have solved this problem by fitting a tilt switch. So now if the boot pops open (and I don't know about it) the light won't come on until the boot lid is lifted up about 12". No flat battery in the morning.

Fairly easy and cheap DIY so I will create a step by step post for that too.

The TRD bits are really expensive to buy after market!
