Exhaust Tip - broken bolts - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

So I bought some GT86 exhaust tips and when I tried loosening the 10mm bolts on my existing ones, they felt seized. So I PB blasted them and tried again, and when I did, the bolts broke.

So...what do I do now? There is no exposed piece or part of the bolt I can grab onto on the exhaust tip.

EasyOut? Or maybe a Dremel and just cut a slot around the bolt to slide the tip off?

Or you can cut a slot in it with a dremel and use a flat head to unscrew it further.

Try pulling on them and see if they'll slide out.

What we do at work is drill out the remaining bolt then use the next size up tap/bolt.

But in this case I would use a dead blow mallet and make the bastard come out. Sure it would gouge the pipe but you'll never see it nor any one else if you put another tip on.

I had this happen to me as well. I opted for the brute force approach and just used the claw of a hammer and beat the shit out of it until it slid off the pipe.

A more rationale approach would have been to use a cut-off wheel on a dremel or drill and cut the bolt off between the pipe and the old tip. More sparks, less banging.

Honestly even if the bolt came out cleanly I found the tips really difficult to remove. They are sort of crimped on there. I had to seriously fight with mine for an hour to get them off.

This happened to me when I over-torqued my bolts. I was lucky and was able to use pliers to grab the threaded-side of the bolt to loosen it from there.

If I remember correctly, I slid under the car head-first, so I was looking at the opposite side of the exhaust tip (the part that faces the front of the car). If you shine a light, you should see the threaded bolt that some pliers can reach to.

I had this happen when I replaced the small stock tips with some nicer looking ones from Perrin. What I did was get behind the lower edge of the tip with a screw driver and then pulled down and back at the same time. The lower bottom of the old tip bent and allowed the broken screw to come clear of the pipe. Then I just slide them off. Took some force pulling down with the screw driver, but it worked

Mine just twisted off when trying to take them out. Looks exactly like yours. I took my new tips into a garage, and they put them on for $20
