5mm Spacers?

So I plan on upgrading my wheels to 18x9.5s from my current 17x9 setup. I've heard that I'd need at least a 5mm spacer from the +40 offset down to a 35 offset. Is a 5mm gonna be that bad?

I'm running on springs and stock struts, don't really wanna deal with having to buy a whole coilover setup. I don't wanna go cheap on coilovers either if I were to buy some.

Some say it is safe. Some say it is not. Every setup is slightly different and camber settings are different.

With +38 to +40 there is maybe 5mm of clearance.
Go measure your current setup and see how much clearance you have. Do some math and figure out if you think it is safe enough.

If you gave me the offset info I could tell you how much difference between old and new set.

Is 5mm clearance safe enough for you?

And thats the reason why im asking about clearance. Im not too sure if any spacer is safe as opposed to no spacer at all

It also depends on the sizes of tires you are running. It's hard to tell you it'll rub or not just by wheel specs alone.

+36 vs +40, 4mm closer inboard
x9 vs x9.5 =.5 inch is 12.7mm, so half inside, half outside. 6.35mm each side.
So... 10.35mm closer inboard on the new setup vs the old.
And 2.35mm wider on the outside.

So go check your clearance at this point, and imagine another 10.35mm or half inch taking more space and see if it will "fit"

Is 5mm clearance safe enough for you?

For a 5mm spacer you should really get longer studs, regardless of anything else. The stock ones are short, and you won't get enough thread engagement with the spacer.

What are you worried about? Inner strut clearance? What size tire are you looking to run?

With those wheel specs and stock struts with lowering springs, many people run a 255/35/18 tire without issues. If you want to run a larger tire, then I would suggest a spacer with extended studs as others have mentioned.

I'm running 18X9.5 +38 with 245/35 tires with the stock struts for over a year and haven't had any issues. It's hard to take a picture of it, but here's a look to the clearance. I haven't had any rubbing so far.

Will 3mm spacers get you the clearance you need? If so, they should work ok on the stock studs with enough thread to safely hold the wheel in place.
