Can I reprogram my head unit with someone else's SD card?

My car battery was disconnected, and that rebooted my BRZ Radio/NAV HU. It requires the SD card to reprogram the car, but I was never given one when I bought my car. I'm wondering, if I'm able to borrow an SD card off another car / driver with their permission, can I reprogram it with their card?

Card is in the head unit. Look for it. It should be ok to use another card.

You can use different card, but it will work until first power loss (battery disconnect).

My car never included one. I got mine with 50 miles on it when I bought it, nav sd card was missing. Dealer refused to give me one.

Image will not work. Files on each SD card are encrypted to SD card CID number. You have to use original SD card. There is no workaround with this issue (unless something changed during last couple months). I spent days searching for info how to use data on different SD card with no success

Agree with the above. I bought an SD card with newer map set off of eBay. Swapped SD cards and enjoyed the updated maps. Several months passes until I had my battery go dead. Upon getting the car started, my headunit reset and I was unable to use it until I found my original card. Once it booted, I was, able to swap to the new card again.

Sounds like you had better talk to the dealership about your original card.

So I found another owner today and we tried to fix my radio using his SD card. I popped in the card, the screen goes black... and nothing. We tried it several times, and no result. Is there anything that's supposed to happen when I do this?

No idea what to do now, except buy a new radio. This is bullshit and subaru should feel bad for this. No idea how I can argue with my dealership about this, I've went to them before about it 2 years ago and they just stated that my car didn't come with one.

Is there any procedure I should go by to reprogram the radio? Obviously from my earlier post it didn't seem to work.

@Vmax911 Ok thanks for the info. Now I know that if the original SD card is lost, the radio will never work again. Nice job on that one, Subaru.

Just got off the phone with the dealership. I listed them the details of what's happened and they heard my concern, but I don't think they feel obligated to fix this problem.

Not really. Other original Subaru SD cards should work without issues. But it has to be original one, not just image copy. And of course come from the same type of head-unit.

Are you sure? Has anybody tested this to make sure? What was the reprogramming procedure?

I tried to use someone else's SD card, I think it was from a 2014 BRZ (I have a 2013), and the screen just stayed black when I inserted the SD card. Different radios?

FRS and BRZ uses totally different head-units. As I remember FRS does not have SD card, but I am not sure.

Yes, I am sure that different SD card should work. They even sell SD cards separately as replacement (but it cost ~$200...). There were some changes to head-unit in 2014, thus maybe card is not the same
