This is why those with failed engines need to contact the NHTSA
Check out the link below. Because enough people filed a complaint about engine failures in the Sonata, engines are going to be replaced. The description of the failure sounds similar to some of the stories around here.

Hyundai says that metal debris may not have been fully removed from the crankshaft area during manufacturing at Hyundai's Alabama engine plant Read more at http://www.wral.com/hyundai-recalls-...RrUzFF1egFG.99 They came out straight saying that all of the metal debris from the crankshaft MAY not have been removed. Like subaru would EVER commit to saying that. They would deny your warranty because the car was "driven hard" or "modifications were made." Which can and probably is true for most of their engines. While in early 08/09? they had a lot of engine failures with their new sti hatchback when they converted to the new body style. Those engines were completely replaced but those engines had problems early on and are usually replaced because of the warranty anyways. I do not think they will do this with our cars.. They have denied much warranty work on our cars due to either people being stupid or modifying the engine and then expecting the dealership to fix it. I will admit though there has been some legitamate issues where there was no real owner causes for the engine to fail. With that being said most engine failures with subaru is definately rod knock which is just shitty design from subaru.

while interesting maybe this could be of more helpful in the warranty issue section. especially considering the fractional number of subarus running around.

Since no one knows for sure why some of the twin's motors have failed, modified or not, if enough people make their failure known to the NHTSA it can prompt a recall or at least an extended engine warrantee. It would also force Subaru to acknowledge that there is an issue. Trust me, they know what is going on in these oil starvation failures.
As a matter of fact, didn't someone here find excessive silicone in an engine and postulated that the silicone floating around could result in oil starvation?? Who knows, maybe that's the issue. The NHTSA could make Subaru come clean. |

If enough people complain, they can prompt the NHTSA to investigate. Whether a fix is offered depends on what is causing the failure. And before everyone flips out about how many failures we've had, engine failure(s) are sort of like yield rates on semiconductor manufacturing. A new design will have a seemingly higher failure rate than the industry average, and as manufacturing improves and experience is gained, the failure rate will be about the same as others. In other words: I don't see the benefit of filing claims with the NHTSA unless Toyota or Subaru is purposely stonewalling a legit engine failure claim issue. -alex |

I think there is a true benefit. An engine failure at the wrong time is a safety issue. If enough people file a claim, that can prompt an investigation by the NHTSA. If nothing is found, fine. But we will never know unless the first step is taking by the consumer...filing those claims with NHTSA. Then let the NHTSA take if from there.
