Former Honda Boy's FR-S Build
Initially, FRS/BRZ twins were never really on the top of the lists of cars I wanted. I mean, it is a nice car but I never really had the “I really want one” feeling. Until I test drove one, my perspective on the twin has changed completely. I totally fall in love with the handling, the driving feels, etc.
It all started after I started to feel like a change from the 2009 Civic Si that I have owned for nearly 7 years. I built it from stock with every basic bolt-on available, went through both track, and stance modifications. But eventually I feel like a change from the FWD , VTEC, and the Honda community (No insult, I still like Honda, but it is the reason why I don’t feel like daily in a Civic anymore haha). I knew I want my next car to be something that is not FWD, preferably turbo. I started out looking for S15 Silvia, R33 and R34 Skyline (Thank you Canada 15-years import rules!). But eventually gave up as insurance was a pain and impossible to sort without proper connection to an appropriate broker (Stupid Ontario insurance, ugh). Then I started looking at used WRX / STi, but was getting no where as the cars are either overpriced or beaten to hell. Until one day when I was checking out a WRX, and I noticed a clean used BRZ on the lot selling for cheap and decided to test drive it (because why not? Since the WRX was disappointing and I drove quite a distance to the dealer). Oh boy the test drive totally transformed my perspective on the twin. The driving experience totally amazed me. It basically has everything that I felt was missing from the Civic Si. I finally understood what is the hype is about. I was determined to buy a FRS / BRZ. Unfortunately that BRZ has a collision record and the salesman was refusing to budge on the price, combined with a ridiculous trade-in offer for my Civic, I ended up walked away. Now, determined to get a twin, I was initially only focusing on hunting for a BRZ since I am a bigger fan of the BRZ front bumper, and the dual climate control / navi was a bonus for me. However, there were very few used BRZ around my area and prices were higher than what I wanted to pay. Eventually I started to give FRS a chance, and I saw an ad “Rare FR-S Series 10” on autotrader. At first I have no idea what a 10 Series is. The car caught my attention mainly because it has the nicer led headlight, and the unique grayish-silver that remind me of the cement grey from the Scion tc (I am a big fan of that grey). So I arranged an appointment with the dealer to check out the car. At first, I wasn’t really expecting to buy it because mainly my mind is still on the BRZ. However, as I saw the car in person, I totally fall in love with the colour, and then I learned it is the limited edition that comes with the dual climate control and keyless entry, boy I was totally surprised. After a nice test drive and worked out a fair deal on the car and trade-in with the salesperson. Now I am officially a happy FR-S owner. Started out in a Matrix, a few ricer mods, my ricer days haha ![]() The Si, through different stages Daily with a bit of track duties ![]() ![]() Stance (Decided to give it a try and see what the hype is about. Found a set of low offset American Racing for cheap, slap it on. Drove for 2 months scraping everywhere and destroying fender liners, decided to screw it as I wasn’t really my style) ![]() ![]() Back to daily with more track duties (Final stage) ![]() Project / track car: EG Hatch (Started out as a beat up pos, restore it to kind of decent lol) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Went through the Stock D16 -> B18c1 - > K20A2 stages, the fun times. From body work to engine swap, I tried to do everything by myself with my buddies in my garage. Was loads of fun and learned a lot of mechanical skills from it. Sold it few months ago due to work schedule stopping me from tracking And now for the FR-S! ![]() ![]() Plans are piling up but I am still planning on the mods. I will be more focused on suspension / brakes / tires since the handling / driving sensations are the priority of this build! Sorry for the long post!
