Reverse camera to avoid

I'm out shopping for my 4th reverse camera as the first 3 were fails. I wanted to share with everyone what I bought and why it didn't work. All 3 were bought from eBay for under $15 each.

This was the first one:

It looked great, but it was too long to fit perfectly inside the rectangle box on the lid above the license place.

Then I bought this one:

This one is still on there now. Great image, but as the truck lid is slightly angled (at least mine is), I have a better shot of the license plate and bumper than I do of whatever is behind me. I had to jenky it with a piece of foam to tilt it. Better view now, but looks ghetto and that is unacceptable.

Last week I bought this one:

This one fits great, but the wire part is so bulky that I would have to drill an enormous hole in the lid to fit everything through and I'm not going to do that. I might use it for a camera up front, but the camera box is kind of bulky and I don't think it looks that good.

I'll post up when I try again lol. I'm going to try to find another #2 that doesn't have such a steep angle. If anyone can recommend one, let me know. Thanks.

I have the same camera and you are good for mounting it.

There is a removable rubber plug to the left of the left tail light inside under the carpet. I think there was one on right also. You make a hole in that rubber plug and the wiring squeezes through and drops down to that spot I have pictured. I used a zip tie to keep the wires away from the muffler. I had unscrewed the lens part and reversed the way the camera is on the little mount. Then used a very sticky, 20 lb, double sided tape and mounted it in that spot. The tape is above the plastic so the little feet are not visible. It almost hangs there if that makes sense. No screw holes had to be drilled anywhere. The camera is not coming off unless I pry it off. Probably would have to use a razor blade to scrape between the tape and plastic as it is really sticky stuff. I can take a better pic if you need to see how I did it up under there.

View on camera: The top of the image has a little dip coming down. That is the middle of the bumper in case that's not apparent from the picture. In that position, I can see about 6" on the ground back from the end of the car. So I can back up to something that is only 6" from the car and be safe.

Just cut and splice the wires. I don't mean slap some tape on them but a proper splice. Can fit through any hole that way.

backup camera

See my post under "What did you do for your FR-S today
Camera Source unit. Very small and has a good picture. Looks like a factory install. It too is angled down a bit, but I'll fix that.

I've heard beat sonic is making one, most of their products are quality and I think they're made specially for our car. I'd check it out ft86 has them

A 350z member took out (iirc) left light that illuminates his rear license plate and added something that looks like that in one slot, then added a brighter light /bulb to right side that illuminates the license plate. So, that's one way to avoid drilling. Just a fyi.

I'll see if I can find the thread (back in '09 on some Nissan/Honda forums)

It doesn't have the backup guidance tho.

Trying to see if anyone tried to mod it yet to get the lines to come up.

Are the lines a necessity? I would just use the cam to see behind me when I park.
