If anyone is serious about going for these, let me know. I've talked to Bilstein about them quite a bit. Not cheap.
I did get to touch them once, so there's that. - Andy |

so, always, what's stopping them from putting this technology into a regular damper body for OEM use? Just supply/demand?

Hey, I'd pay 5k extra if the FRS came oem with a high end damper from factory.. way better value than the silly RS1.0 thing they cobbled together.

Either way, both setups are impressive. If you ever get a chance to drive these shocks, JRZs, Sachs, Penske, etc...they are pretty amazing. |

The problem is that, if the manufacturer add 5k to a car, he will sell it 50k more. A full car should be less than 5k for Toyota.
As an example : a modern 2l diesel engine cost around 2000€. That's half the price of the car. Gasoline engine are a lot cheaper. That's why, even good cars, are build with shit parts. That's why we have to change everything. I know mostly engine parts, but I guess the full OEM suspension system will cost maybe 50$ to the manufacturer. Engineering cost are so high that the cost of parts is mostly nothing in the price payed by the customer. So we will never get good parts on anything less than McLaren or Porsche RS. (And they will still not be race car quality) I want some Penske stuff so bad :p

I'd bet we're closer to $300-400 cost to Subaru for shocks springs, hats, arms, bushings and bolts. OEMs make money, but it's really more like $1000-2000 per car.

Yes, they make 1000$ per car on 30 000$ car. 5000$ in parts, 24000$ development, 1000$ margin.
One day of engine dino is 2000€. One emission cycle on the rolling bench is 1000€ ( you can make 12 cycles a day, 6 days a week.) You have like 100 engine dinos running at the same time and 20 rolling benches. And that's just the price to run the test. You have to add the price of the guys that will process the results. Costs are just crazy.

An example of cost, water radiator is around 15$. They can build crapy one for 10$.
A base 5 speed manual gearbox cost like 100$.
