Out of State Purchase & new CA Registration

So I just bought my replacement BRZ in AZ beause it was the only Series.Blue w/in driving distance.

Anyone know if I'm going to have to smog it, or have it inspected before I can register her?

I ask because it has an Injen intake & I don't have a stock replacement.

@Hyper4mance2k: same process applies.

If you bought it private party, you need the title instead of the Certificate of Origin in my post.

If you paid sales tax in AZ, you need proof of taxes paid so you can offset vs CA tax. Any local taxes in AZ may be a sunk cost and not applicable towards CA tax offset.

Yeah you need to have the car smogged. Find a stock intake somewhere.

You probably need to smog if you bought from dealer.

I brought my old car to CA from when I lived in Illinois, yes, I had to have it smogged. When it comes time to register, do it at AAA, no line, can walk in, get your plates right there. Just call or go on website to ask what forms you need.

Applicable if it is a used car.

AAA won't do new car registration, UNLESS the dealer in the other state already titled the car in that state.

There is a handful of AAA offices that will do new car registration but this is the exception rather than the norm.

In that case I think its probably easier to initially get titled in another state then switch to CA. But you do eat the yearly reg fee from the other state.

So.... I went to register my car, everything went well except for one thing. The DMV wont register my car w/o a title from AZ since my car is "used." I don't have a title becasue I financed the car. I called the dealer and they had yet to even start the title process becasuse I was taking it out of state, so now I have to wait for AZ to issue a title to my lein holder, then have my lein holder send me the title, then I can take the title to CA DMV, then I have to wait for them to issue a CA title... Let's add this to the reasons to leave Commiefornia list.
