Can I rant about these fuel pump replacements?
I've seen some members who've gone through every revision of fuel pump replacement since 2013 to try and silence the DI crickets. Somewhere posted is the price for the replacement part and it's over $1000 a pop, and it doesn't do JACK CRAP to fix the problem. I'm still on my OM fuel pump and it works fine as I can tell, though has crickets when it gets hot or perhaps bad gas.
So I'm asking, what is SOA doing throwing away money on this problem? They'll honor warranty work on something that doesn't do anything to fix the problem, but they'll deny warranty work for other problems? Post your concerns if any. I know I'm stirring the shit but there has to be something said about this. Last edited by radroach; 02-20-2015 at 11:54 PM. |

Well, those of us who were born and raised with engines with solid lifters, may not be as perturbed with the DI sound, because, it seems we always had at least one tappet out of adjustment. In fact, if they didn't make a little "chatter" they may be adjusted too tight (a bad thing).
OR ..... maybe we are old and just don't hear too good anymore...... ![]() humfrz |

I agree totally that people getting multiple pumps are wasting time and money.
But...eventually one of the changes (notice the word used is not "fixes") may just do the trick so somebody has to try them. The sad part is that even if a new pump eliminates the noise it will be hard to know for sure since it is so sporadic in the first place.

I had crickets too but I posted somewhere about it.
But all I did was use the Lucas fuel cleaner. I haven't heard any crickets ever since. Try that and let us know if it fixes anything. Just drive to your local autozone or something. I just posted a link for you to reference. I don't know if you wanna spend almost 30 bucks for something like this when you can go to autozone and buy a smaller size one. We have heard all the "fixes" and although some seem to work for some people there is no magic wand!

DI pumps click/clatter...been that way forever. I can accept and live with that as it is just the nature of the beast. However, the squeak/cricket noise is not, and that is the sound that drives me up the wall.
Damn crickets...

I agree..... does not make sense to take the chance of the dealer messing up your car by replacing the fuel pump when the crickets will come right back. As I have posted before, I rarely hear them with the 2 cycle TCW-3 oil additive.

Staying on topic, my point is that Subaru is shelling out a thousand for each fuel pump replacement (parts cost plus labor). Are 86 owners subsidizing these costs with the purchase of their vehicle?

Yeah you can just go to your local auto-zone and get the same lucas one that I linked but in a smaller size for 10 bucks. I don't think that's very expensive, especially considering going through the dealership and having them fix it. Only for you to discover crickets again.
I was just saying give it a shot and see how it goes, it worked for me. And I hope it works everybody else. I know it shouldn't have came like that from the factory and all but I'd rather spend the 10 dollars than go through the dealership headaches. |

Granted, it wasn't anticipated but someone would have already redesigned the pump if it was determined to be the less costly route.

So, it's an annoying noise, but just a noise? If I decide to just turn up the stereo or get a louder muffler and roll there's no mechanical problems coming?
Premix you say? I just moved out of an RX7 so I've got plenty of premix oil and the willingness to use it if it truly prevents the noise. |
