Need ecutek to dyno tune?

I've been looking into getting my frs dyno tuned but I am wondering if you need the ecutek software for them to be able to tune it at the dyno or it's just a kit to plug and play tune

Welcome to the forums.

There is a LOT of info on this on these forums if you look at the stickies and do some searching. There are 3 main tuning solutions available for an 86/BRZ/FRS, Ecutek, OFT and BRZedit. Each has their pros and cons. I suggest you talk to you tuner and find out his preference.

To dyno tune, you need something that will edit the ECU as well as a tuner that is familiar with working with it.

EcuTek is popular because many dyno tuners are already using it.

Another option, and probably better suited for you unless you're going custom FI, is to just get an off the shelf tune. EcuTek and OFT both provide off the shelf tunes for whatever your application may be.

The Tactrix Openport 2.0 is very capable piece of hardware which is not software-tied.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most tuners already have their own software/hardware don't they?

If they've done a few FRS/BRZ tunes, and plan to do more, they probably have an ECUtek cable and software, yes. You still have to buy a license from someone, whether from your tuner or someone else. So you still have to pay the $300 or whatever license cost PLUS whatever your tuner charges for the actual tune.

If they use some other tuning package, same deal (assuming whatever they use needs a license/key as well).

As always, it is best to talk to your tuner BEFORE you start buying stuff. They might work on you with pricing if you get everything from them at the same time, they will tell you what they are most comfy with, etc.

For better or worse, the only "plug and play" tuning device for the FRS/BRZ is the OFT

Meaning that all you will use is the OFT to write a tune to your ECU. No need for a laptop/extra cabling/software licenses. This device also allows you (or your tuner) to apply custom dyno tuning changes using free software (RomRiader) that you and download off the website. In addition to that the OFT allows for on-board datalogging, digital dash displays, user configurable tuning alerts and diagnostic functions.

Ecutek is a completely different product and its worth doing some research to see if it meets your needs.
