If I install a backup camera does it void the warranty?
I have a certified used Subaru. BRZ I want to install a backup camera. Will that void the warranty? I don't want to wait for the warranty to expire.

You can't void the warranty. Magnuson-Moss act defines your rights and that of the dealer.

Come on man. Do you really think installing a back up camera is going to void the warranty?!

The entire warranty, no. Maybe only if you are trying to make a warranty claim for electrical components or the head unit, assuming that is what the backup camera links to.

They have to prove the modification you made caused the problem you are making a warranty claim on. I hear it's actually pretty hard for the dealer to refuse something

Warrantees don't get voided; service under your warranty can be denied. Moss magnusson protects you only for non-oem parts that are within the manufacturer's design spec. Eg: non-oem air filters won't prevent you from getting service covered for a jacked up MAF.
Mod something, expect to pay for it if/when it breaks. If you can't afford to do that then don't mod.

But the Act doesn't mean that you won't have a hard time trying to get warranty work done. Plenty of owners of performance-oriented cars sometimes even have headaches getting warranty work done when completely stock.
Sure, in the end, you can cite it and eventually get things your way, but it's not as if the mere mention of it will make the dealership and/or the manufacturer fold. |

Just don't mention the mods when you need service and when they refuse argue over why your mod couldn't have caused the problem you are having. If it caused it you're screwed and shouldn't be taking it to the dealer because they will screw you. Never go to the dealer unless it's covered by warranty.

I remember my Evo's fuel door stopped opening a few years ago (it was a broken plastic clip that pops the fuel door open when you pull the release, and it costs $2-3), but I figured I'd take it in and get it fixed under warranty anyway and get the carwash out of it. The service manager said he'd need to first confirm that my car wasn't modded... you know, because an output greater than stock apparently prematurely wears out your fuel door clip.
Obviously that service manager was a complete idiot and not necessarily indicative of the typical warranty claim experience, but it's not always going to be a walk in the park... and my car has always been 100% bone stock too and I had that stupid conversation. |

^ Yea, standard operating procedure in some places. You figure if a dealer does too much warranty work (staistically vs. the national/regonal average) and the national organization takes a harder look at their request for reimbursement.
That fuel door clip though. Holy shit, lol.

Yeah, I've got stories for days. Another time, within a few months of buying the car, it just felt out of alignment, so I brought it in. I tend to wander around the dealership when my car is in for service, and I happened to walk by their service bays and saw a technician putting air in the tires on the right side. A little later, the tech says that my car was driving fine, but I pulled out my tire pressure gauge in front of the guy and asked why the right side was at 40 psi. He said maybe my gauge was off, but thanks to America's Tire Co. giving them for free, I had another one handy, but before I could check the tire pressure, the guy was like, "We can just go ahead and do the alignment, if you have time."
