CEL P0020 - "A" Camshaft Position Actuator...

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone's ever had this CEL come up. It's come up twice for me, both times under the following circumstances:

Holding about 48-52mph in 3rd gear on a highway off-ramp, (probably holding around 1G+ lateral. I have fun in ramps) slightly banked.

The car appears to drive fine. 52.5k miles on her with plenty of track days, long trips and spirited driving.

I've decided to start a new thread because I could not find any with this code, and the closest TSB (S-SB-0033-13) does not list the code either.

If anyone's had the issue or has any ideas, I would appreciate it. I'll be taking the car to the dealership later today if I can get out of work.

If relevant, mods:

Nameless Header, FP/OP, Axleback
Mishimoto Intake Tube
K&N Panel Filter
Moto-east Flex-fuel, but the car was running 93 (E10) in both instances.

Any ideas of what it might be?

Oil starvation resulting in unwanted VVT changes? That's my best guess for a steady state sweeper. Does it happen with a stock tune?

Oil control valve current is less than 0.306 A for intake camshaft circuit for 2 seconds or more (bank 2).
(1 trip detection logic)
  • Open or short in camshaft timing oil control valve circuit (for intake side of bank 2)
  • Camshaft timing oil control valve (for intake side of bank 2)
  • ECM

Dont know if that'll help, but theres no TSB's or any logged issues on Identifix about this code. I will say, we've seen several late model cars with oil control / timing problems with a root cause of insufficient oil changes (passages plug up). I'll keep looking for info on this, since its likely to come up a few times here and there as the cars get some mileage on them.

Haven't tried to replicate on stock tune. If the dealer doesn't fix I wil try that. I'll also check the oil level.

Oil level and condition is a big part of what can set codes like that. We see a number of Hondas each year that have V-TEC codes stored, and all because of oil level or condition. Hopefully its an easy fix !!!

Good to know. I'll do an oil change this weekend and attempt to replicate. A friend suggested it might be a blockage in the VVTI passage.

For me it was the cam sensor, once swapped the car returned to normal and no more code after a few months and around 6 track days. It was the sensor at the same place where I keep burning coil packs so I guess the heat just burned the cam sensor as well. Others have had other things replaced, the sprocket is also a possible cause. Start by swapping sensors from banks and see if the code moves (should move to P0018). If it does, replace the sensor, if it doesnt, could the cam sprocket or the ECU or something else.
