"Should have been stock" mods

So I've seen some mods described as "should have been stock". Example: drop-in, lower springs, better alignment, better tune... Just small things that really optimize what's already there.

I really like these kinds of mods and I was hoping for more ideas. I've got wheels & tires, drop-in and an OFT on the way.

So, what are some more of these simple, effective things we can do without breaking the bank that you think "should have been stock"?

Any specific bushings? ( transmission, rear-end, subframe, etc...) Things like that?

There can only be one release of a model. Be it a camera, washing machine or car. There had to be a decision to release the car with certain rate springs, a particular braking capacity, a budget on the sound system. Regardless of what is released there are going to be people who want to change from stock. "Better alignment"? Better alignment for what? There is nothing wrong with the stock tune. Lower springs would make it more difficult for some people to get in and out of and probably make it less comfortable.
Everything's a compromise.
You have not given a budget. We don't know how big your bank is.

Have you given up on the coilovers?

I'm sorry I'm not one of the people who thinks the car is the end-all driving experience from the factory. It leaves a lot to be desired. Period.

If you don't understand a question I'm not sure you should be participating in the conversation.

Stop trolling me with these responses.

I also used to wonder about those small changes, and someone pointed out something to me. If it costs a company $0.10 per unit on a $5,000 camera, say, to make a change that everyone would enjoy - if they sell 500,000 cameras, what it actually costs them is $50k. Why spend 50k? For Toyota/Subaru, changes are much more than $0.10 per and include labor, development, etc.

You're right - this is the model that appeals to the largest number of people for the lowest price - 86 platform is selling very well and we are the minority of ownership.

But back on topic, depending on your model year, sway bars can be nice (2015 suspension is different). Also, depending on preference, interior lighting. Do you have stock exhaust still? Changing that made a big difference to me.

A turbo should have been stock

But really, I'd suggest looking at what was stock on other models (aka, JDM, TRD, STI, Mono, 10, limited, etc). I really wish clear side markers and shark fin antenna were stock.

You seem to have misunderstood my post. I was not inferring it was perfect for you. I was saying a car can't be released with 47 million different options.

You haven't given a budget which makes it difficult to make any suggestions.
You also haven't stated if coilovers are still on your shopping list because this affects your decision on which bushes to install or not.

Wheels and tires, or at least have the option to switch them out at the factory with something that looks less than what a prius would use.

I think the OP is asking what mods make the most improvement to the car, not "why didnt it come stock with coilovers?" Stop nitpicking, its not like he's angry that Subaru/Toyota skimped out and didn't give us a tuner special. He's just asking for what mods people like/love the most.

OP: I find that an Open Flash Tablet tune and rear differential bushing inserts are the two mods that I absolutely love. I can actually remember saying to myself, "This is how the car should have come stock."

Its just a forum guys, no need for hostility.

Coilovers are not on my list, as I don't need the adjustability.

We also have a difference in opinion. Example: I think the car is too tall from the factory for a sports car. I feel if you think lowering it a little makes it "too hard to get in", you shouldn't be buying a sports car. But no, toyobaru (and all manufacturers) wanted to sell these things (and most cars) to as many demographics as possible sooo...4x4 it is was we got from the factory.

Perfect input. Rear diff bushing inserts are now on my list.

Edit: Link to the ones you purchased?

  • Camber bolts
  • Wider throttle pedal (from a Camry!!), makes heel-and-toe that much easier
  • Oil temp gauge (in place of the useless analog speedo)
  • Decent tires (my BRZ remains totally driftable with AD08Rs, so the whole "more fun" point is kinda off topic), like PS3s.

All that from the current suppliers/part bin.

I agree with Captain that car is good as it is, everybody has different needs and everybody will change different parts, altho they can overlap.

I would suggest:
  • Better tires for sure, maybe brake pads too
  • Whiteline KDT921, KDT924, KDT926, KSR210
  • Master Cylinder Brace
  • Short Shifter + Shift Springs
  • Clutch Spring & clutch adjustments
  • Millers Oils + Magplugs
  • ST springs to lower by 1"
  • Exhaust + tune, but that is not cheap mod
