which came first?

Whats the first thing a typical car enthusiast thinks when questioned on the roots of jdm? I would guess that most people would say that jdm started with drifting i.e ae86, 180sx etc. But what about the Kanjo racers and the Hondas from that culture? Were the kanjo racers first?

Im assuming that the origin of jdm must be seperated into two begginings: one with the Kanjo racers, and the other with drifting...

Pretty sure none of those predated the 1st century AD which is the first reference known to Japan, and I assume they had a domestic market for something at that time.

JDM car mods happened here dating back to the 60s and 70s, before any of your references as far as I know. Since Kanjo racers are just dumb street racers and the AE86 was far away still.

In no particular order I think Japan earned their enthusiast respect in the late 60's early 70's competing with European cars in terms of performance and styling with domestic prices:

Datsun Roadster/510/240Z being excellent racers all around for the money and winning events from endurance races to rally races
BRE Datsun winning races in SCCA and Trans-Am with the aforementioned cars
Mazda Cosmo, RX2, RX3, RX4, REPU being performance bargains
Honda got 2 F1 wins and a handful of podiums in the 60's

And of course the Toyota 2000GT driven by James Bond

Sure I forgot something, but when it comes to Japan proving themselves to enthusiasts they did that decades before any anime got dubbed aside from Speed Racer and Astro Boy.

I believe the JDM you are thinking of originated in a Japanese cartoon series around 1995 and a American movies series that started around 2001.

People are still in denial that it came from Japan.
