Winona, My Wingless Angel

Hello! And welcome.

A Little About Me:

I am currently a 21-year-old, Male, US Airman in a domestic partnership with my lovely Whiteout Scion FR-S, Winona. I'm a techy/gearhead trough and through. Anything that runs on electricity or gasoline is my love. I spent a number of years working as an electrical technician for a very large arcade in Chicago, and then another stretch of time as a Controls Technician for Felsomat (a precision tooling company that provides Ford and Chrysler with many of their tooling and automation systems). I went to college for a couple years for Electrical Engineering, but money got tight, so I joined up with the Air Force as an Aircraft Technician. We'll see how that works out. I've got gadgets o'plenty and am not afraid to dive deep into my car's electrical systems to add the most unnecessary but entirely too-cool-to-pass-up modifications.

I like the clean, OEM look. Modifications are my friends, but only ones that will add to or compliment the original aesthetics of the car. I plan to have this car for many a year to come and I will likely never stop adding/subtracting/changing things to chase the ever elusive image of my dream for my car.

I want to share her story to anyone who cares to listen. So I decided to make this Journal in case anyone want to ask questions about parts I've bought, ask me advice, or compliment Winona. : ) Enjoy!

A Little About Her:

Winona is an Automatic Whiteout Scion FR-S. I picked her up and drove her home on June 14th, 2014. She came bone stock, with no TRD parts or optional accessories. I'm a firm believer that a car is your story, why would you want anyone else to write it for you? If my car is going to be anything other than stock, I'll be the one to do it. Due to a long and complicated story about love, loss, friendship, and betrayal that I will not get into here, Winona is pretty much the only thing I have left to my name and I love her to death.

My plan is to keep her on 93 gas until around May, when I get stationed up in Nebraska. There is like 4 E85 gas stations around the base, so I'm going to switch over to corn juice and have some fun with that. I'm also going to keep her NA up until the warranty expires, then I'll boost her up and get a new DD.

Timeline:

2014

June 14th - Bought, driven home bone stock
June 24th - 1000 miles on ODO, break-in period completed
July 9th - Removed "FR-S" badge, plasti-dipped rims and emblems black
July 12th - Installed (hardwired) Whistler XTR130 Radar Detecter
July 13th - Installed Raceseng Revo Crank Shaf Pulley
July 17th - Tinted tail lights with Nightshade
July 19th - Installed Toyota 86 Arm Rest
July 24th - Installed JDM TOY Clear side markers
August 1st - Installed Injen CAI
August 5th - Minor fender bender. : ( My fault. Damage to front bumper almost negligible. Some touch-up paint and a lot of cussing.
August 18th - Put Winona in storage. Left for Air Force Basic Training.

A Little About The Future:

The following are bought, and waiting at home for me to install once I get home from Basic Training (Approx. December 20th):

E85 Update:

It just so happens that the gas station right on base sells E85. It's also the only one for like 70 miles. I was planning to corn feed Winona in a few months when I go up to Nebraska, but it looks like I'll be moving that time table up to January. Once the weather warms a little and I know I won't have any issues with cold starts, I'll get that ball rolling.

Updates to come.

I am interested how these two projects turn up:
Fingerprint Scanner - or Keypad lock
Pico-projector full windshield HUD - or any HUD

I know, right? Me too.

These two are still very much in their stages of infancy. I have basic material workups and shopping lists made, with a couple drawings and a lot of imagination.

Fingerprint scanner - Will use an Arduino for I/O, and arduino adaptable FP scanner. Possibly mounted where the Sport/Snow mode button is on an Automatic. To perhaps lockout ignition? Lockout/park release so I can walk away from the car while it's running? Maybe as a "login" so a local VI can address you or accomadate certain preferences?

HUD - This is going to be my favourite. LED Pico projector mounted to the ceiling about ~40-50 inches from windshield, Raspberry Pi for display processing, clear windshield film, GPS integration.

I'll most likely have seperate posts for each project.

I'll be coming home for Christmas. I'll definitely get a lot of pictures of install and the finished product.
