Catted vs resonated front pipe noise reduction difference

Hey I currently have a manzo V2 uncatted exhaust (greddy evo 3 replica), uncatted front pipe and over pipe, and a Borla UEL header. The car is painfully loud. Does anyone know if either the catted or resonated front pipe are "more quiet"? Thanks! Might even just switch out the exhaust

It really depends on the type and build of the resonator. I know the HKS (I believe) has 2 resonators in their front pipe, but most others have one. Hi flowing cats will typically do a bit in the noise reduction as well, but you also won't have as much air flow as a straight through design with no cat.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on exhaust, just going from personal experience and past knowledge.

If you have no cats its going to be loud no matter what. Resonators could help with tone. You may want to add back in the secondary cat, most gains are from removing the cat on the header anyways.

OP, if you're concerning about noise, there is not much difference between Catless vs catted front pipe. how do i know? because i switched from catless to catted FP and there is very little noise reduction. you need to switch your exhaust to quieter one like Q300 or Perrin resonated Exhaust

a resonated FP will tone the exhaust down somewhat and make it less raspy. Resonators cancel out certain tones. You could also have a cherry bomb/glass pack or some other straight through muffler welded in line and that will do a lot to reduce drone.

Yes, I have.

The answer you seek depends on what size cat is on the front pipe you are looking to buy. 99% of the aftermarket front pipe with a HFC uses the same tiny, smaller-than-stock cat that is insufficient for sound suppression and can make your exhaust louder.

OP if you still have stock exhaust components swap in you stock front pipe , that will be about the quietest front pipe you will get. If thats not quiet enough then its unlikely any aftermarket front pipe will be quieter.

then try stock catback with all your catless components, again stock catback is about the quietest arround, will give you a reference to work off.

The stock catback is fairly efficient and quiet, maybe jist install that with your current exhaust setup and get some nice tips for it ??

just put on your stock front pipe. the diameter isn't a big enough difference to affect anything (I measured and i think it was 5mm diff) and you will be much happier with the sound. I did have the tomei titanium header/over/front pipe and switched the front back to stock.. I can contest that it wont make a power difference because I still put down comparable numbers as other guys with my edlebrock kit.

Would a catted UEL header increase the volume much over stock? I've been running an invidia n1 catback and love the sound, but the more I read the forums the more paranoid I get over getting a fix-it ticket. I eventually want a UEL header (catted to help with noise, I hope) but don't want to take the dive if it's going to make the car significantly louder.

I run the Speed Factory catted UEL and I don't think that it contributes much to the volume of the exhaust over stock; I think that mostly comes from the CBE (running the Perrin resonated 2.5"), and it's not that loud either.

Overall volume control is going to come from your cat back system. Yes, the overall system is going to add but a majority of volume control comes from your cat back system.

The front pipe and over pipe will add slight volume but more resonance than anything so you want things in place to stop that, i.e. a cat and/or resonators. Catalytic converters will do a better job at sound suppression then a resonator but not by much and it does not do resonance control very well although its better then nothing. If, you want sound control and resonance control best to with a catted and resonated front pipe. If you don't care to much about volume but want to minimize the resonance/drone then a resonated front pipe is what you want. You really wont see any power loss or gain from this unless you have FI.

Headers on the other hand will do some volume and depending on the design/materials could introduce more resonance. They do more for tone and type of sound, EL vs. UEL. Although, even with the the same classification, i.e. EL or UEL, they will sound different between the brands and that comes down to design and materials. A catted header will reduce sound/resonance but seeing as most if not all headers use high flow cats it doesn't do much for resonance. The resonator on the front pipe will help out here too.
