Shifting at high RPM - Grinding
Hi all,
I haven't been driving manual for too long but I've been trying to shift at high rpm lately. Particularly in first gear, as soon as it gets past 5-6k revs the second I go to clutch I hear a grinding noise. How am I supposed to shift at high rpm in first?

Is this what is happening?
You're at a red light, you engage the clutch and find the point of engagement (No Grinding) Once the clutch is fully engaged -- You rev the car all the way up to 5K RPM Now you want to shift into 2nd gear -- You push the clutch in *Grind* (The shifter hasn't moved yet) Is this correct? Do I describe it perfectly?

Yes correct, just on a much faster scale. I don't think it's an issue with the car as my brother (long time manual driver) tried it tonight at 7k revs and no grind. I believe its my technique, he says I shouldn't push the clutch in all the way.

I disagree with not pushing the clutch all the way in. Some people say that, you don't need to push it all the way down just past the engagement point. We'll for me I'm 6'6". It's easier to hammer that thing to the floor and shift. Also having the clutch on the floor will push the clutch further away from the flywheel. I'm guessing you are just trying to grab the gear a little before you actually have the clutch fully engaged.

Bad syncros. Common problem. Take it to the dealer and get a new transmission like the rest of us did.

I get that quite rarely too. Sometimes at just at low speeds, gear fully engaged, and when half clutching. I just quickly clutch back in and try to re-engage the gear.
Never experienced it at high rpms though. |

Is your foot still partially on the gas when you go for the clutch? Not intentionally, just being very quick with your feet in order to stay smooth.
I get a weird noise when I overlap those inputs (gas and clutch) that could be described as grinding, maybe try slowing down your process to see if you can figure out exactly what you're doing as the noise occurs. It doesn't make sense for a transmission to grind without you moving the stick. |

If I understand what the OP is saying, he hears the grind when disengaging the clutch before pushing the shift lever. Quote:
THAT noise is worse when cold. I actually use the absence of that noise to tell me when the engine is warmed up. It sounds a little like a heat shield that is loose. |

Again, every post I've made in this thread is only in regards to overlapping clutch and throttle inputs. |
