SCCA AutoX Classing...
Since i have becauseracecar'd my daily driver i'm having a hard time figureing out which class i'd run in for SCCA events.
Current mods are: FT86SpeedFactory/VeloxMotorsports front splitter w/ race upgrade TRD Japan Canards 17x9 +42 Rota RT5's w/ 245/40R17 Pilot Super Sports AFE Takeda Intake Dezod Motorsports Dual Cat-Back I will likely have my Hotchkis springs on the car by this event as well... Just by looking thru the list It looks like I'm in Street Modified because of my splitter alone. Is that the case? Think i could just sign up under STX and wait for someone to yell at me? I've only ran one autox in my life and it was in my Cobalt SS Turbo so I doubt i'll be competitive enough to cause a dispute much less be going fast enough for the splitter to do anything. because stracecar

Technically, you'd be in C Street Prepared or Street Mod (can run either). However, at local events, most local regions won't complain about minor body mods past STX's allowances. Just check with your STX competitors but I really doubt they'll have an issue, SCCA members are pretty relaxed most of the time.

It wouldn't be legal for *SP because of the Canards and because that splitter sticks out past the front bumper. Even then it might be questionable for SM legality, since I don't know how far forward it goes.... but I know it's big.
But like he said.... I don't think most people will complain. Protest at local events are usually frowned upon. |

Thanks for being one of the very few to consult the rules first before asking.
Yep. The body mods/aero bits put you in SM. Depending on how far out that splitter sticks (no more than 6" from the widest section from birds-eye'view profile iirc), you might technically not even be SM. You also didn't mention what looks to be brake ducts. It would be nice if you don't knowingly mis-class yourself (particularly as those things might actually be functional aero bits). Because, likely (I've had to do it within the last month) what happens is not a competitor yells at you, but rather comes to someone like me to complain, and then I have to go pop your bubble and ruin your day, and take the jerk/nazi label to avoid identifying the actual complainer. It's rarely beneficial to those involved. A very high percentage of those involved simply stop showing up due to the all-around butthurt. Why won't your class competitors say it to your face? Because they know they're kicking a beehive, and you might punch them in the throat, which gets both of you booted and banned. From a more practical standpoint, I'd take the aero bits off for autocross anyway. It would suck to bust my $plitter and or tear parts of the bumper cover after you more than just nudge a cone. It went on, so I assume it comes off and goes back on with simple hand tools, right? TL;DR - You know the rules, and you are aware of the offending bits, so do everyone a favor: Don't come incorrect. Then people start calling each other asshole.

put down stx and be open about your "aero" mods. The fact that you're not running a tune or coilovers, really shouldn't bother anyone at the local level, even if you perform well.

I missed the canards, Chkltcow is correct.
Pretty much all of our local STR drivers have aero bits (track day cars). But they check with competitors first before running it. If you don't want to check or they have an issue,to Street Mod. Feel free to discuss it with them first though. Especially if you're a newer driver and don't pose an immediate threat. If you start beating many people, they may ask you to bump to SM, just out of being butthurt, as most of us know that those canards and splitter make no real difference in local autocross.

I have actually been informed by a friend who runs SM that the width of that splitter makes it illegal for SM as well. It can stick out in front of the front bumper, but can't be wider than the bumper.

If you're not worried about the fact that you're not competitive, then why the interest in the more favorable classing? Go out and have fun. If you're as far off the pace as you seem to suggest, the only thing that'll help you is putting the 'N' at the front of your class letters.
Ouch on the splitter though. So, that's E-Mod? Well, that's good news for your chances at the trophy locally!

Eric6 has said they can custom-cut a splitter in order to comply with class requirements. So you could get one that doesn't extend past the width of the bumper.

Yeah but even then you end up in a class that's full of monster turbocharged cars like my buddy's GC WRX or Godzilla (the carbon fiber bodied GTR). If you want to be competitive and do it right, just take the aero doodads off and run STX. Or if you just want to have fun, go run Seat Time Only, or see if there's an "STM" class that some regions do these days where it's basically "run what you brung as long as it's on 200tw street tires".

I would imagine that being on the stock header, tune and suspension will go a long way in helping you run in STX. As long as you're open about it and no one objects up front, then you'll be fine.
