Oversteer during overtaking
Hey guys,
I had some strange behaviour which never happened to me with other cars. I would like to explain it, but my English is far from perfect, so hope Ill do it right ![]() First,m I know that it was my fault and it was a dangerous maneuver ;( So please dont punish me, my wife already did it ![]() Basically, I was driving on highway around 140Km and a little bit in hurry ( i know, whole accident was because of this) .. So I was in left lane, behind slow car and very close (because he didnt want to return to right lane). When he began return back to right lane, I begin accelerate (slightly). When I was on the side with him (something like my nose in his center) , my car oversteer to the left. I was really surprised, crash barrier was so close, car oversteered to the left, my wife screaming. So I stopped accelerate and brake a little bit.. and luckily get grip again. Anyway, nothing what I would like to experience again. I assume, that because I accelerated, I had more grip on rear wheel and wind from second car break grip for front wheel and car begin skid... do you have any experience with something like this ? Best Roarke |

When you say the car "oversteered to the left", do you mean it started to drift to the left?
Oversteer usually means the back of the car turns faster than the front. It sounds like you were going is a straight line and the car just started to drift. |

Its hard to explain with my English. The car didnt move to the left without changing direction. it begin turning to the left and it was oversteer IMHO.. the back definitely wanted to overtaking front ...

You probably hit some oil on the road or something to make you lose traction. At 140+ km/h you would have to at least try and induce a slide in regular conditions.

So let me get this straight... you were tailgating, the car moved over to the right, and you sped up going straight, then the car felt like it turned to the left?
Probably a combination of wind turbulence and some slight loss of traction due to road conditions, or you just hit a dip or tracked a rut in the road that you didn't see. You don't "oversteer" going in a straight line, unless you were cornering and the rear slid out.

If you weren't moving the wheel then the only things that could have caused you to move that much would be something on the road (water or oil) or a dip or bump in the road that cause the car to bounce which made it seem like it turned.
140 KMH isn't fast enough to have an aero induced lack of traction. |

Happen to me in the rain before..thats rwd for you. You could of hit an oil patch or something and slightly broke traction in the rear, just ease ease off gas a little and you should be fine. |

There was a skunk in the road and since the opposite lane was clear I decided to dodge it. The TC kicked in hard, not sure why I wasn't THAT aggressive lol.
But since you didn't lane change I don't know what happened

Why do I have a vision of you in court saying,
"There was a skunk in the road and ....." "Your honor...."
