Air filter question

I've taken off the stock air filter a couple times and decided to replace mine today.

One thing I noticed every time I've taken it out was that even though the air filter goes back in only one way correctly, it seems like it's incorrect. To explain there's the divot on the air filter when you install it backwards that makes it fit on the airbox nearly perfectly, except that one squared corner of the filter will cause it to fit only one way. Has anybody noticed that?
