Possible 3rd Brake Light Delete

So my question is this: Is it possible/legal to delete the 3rd brake light as shown in this thread: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10002

and then replace the 3rd brake with an illuminated badge like the one shown here?:


I think it could look good. What do you guys think?

would all depend on the laws in your state. i know in CA we have a requirement that the 3rd brk light must be within certain height parameters, but nothing as far as the size of the light is concerned.

Pick up a copy of the current years vehicle code at the DMV for like $5, knowing the exact letter of the law and having it handy in my glove box has gotten me out of quite a few tickets in years past.

I read that the light must be 3 inches from the bottom of the rear windshield for passenger vehicles, but is that only in the y axis? That is to say, if you were looking directly at it? I hope I'm making sense. I feel like that law was written with a flat-backed vehicle in mind.

They most likely mean, exactly 3" with a tape measure, flat on the back glass, from the lower most point, straight up..
Though I think your states law would also state specifically, on what side of the 3"mark do you have to be, 3" high up the back glass, or no more than 3" below it, or anywhere in between?

No, unfortunately the law prohibits red light on the front of the vehicle. I've been debating getting it in white, but I'm not sure if I would like how it would effect the lights. I'll update with more pics when I get the chance.

Just found this in the Oklahoma legislature

C. If so equipped in its original design and manufacture, every motor vehicle shall be additionally equipped with a center high-mounted stop lamp located on the vertical center line above the level of the stop lamps described in this section which shall display a red light, visible from a distance of not less than five hundred (500) feet to the rear in normal sunlight, and which shall be actuated upon application of the brakes.

So it looks like in Oklahoma there is no height restriction? Now I just need to make sure it's visible from 500 feet away, the only problem might be in the daylight.
