Mercedes E55 AMG...Fast..but not fast enough.
So driving to work the other day, and took my brz out, since it was nice. I was headed in around 11am, so no traffic on the highway, where i come in from. I'm cruising along and out of no where a crazy loud matte gray e55 pulls up next to me.
The passenger, kind of motions to go, and since i was in a good mood, mashed the pedal. I was not really sure what to expect, but man, that AMG is fast! We both took off and were running pretty strong, with me slowly gaining more and more ground. I even shifted a bit sloppy, as this was actually one of the only and first real cars i have encountered on the street that hung with me that long, and i was not expecting it. I was immediately gaining ground on him, but nothing spectacular, maybe a foot a second or something like that. Once i shifted into 6th, thats when i really started putting distance, and in the end i left him behind, probably a good 10 car lengths or more, but didnt really start getting distance until midway through 6.....And at that point, he was probably letting off, as we were probably at a pretty good speed. Afterwards, he pulled up next to me...the driver was yelling, man that car is F*$k!ng fast! I said the same thing to him, we through up the deuces and we went our separate ways. This was really the one and only time i have had room and someone to run against on the street, as i dont drive my car too much, and usually there is traffic everywhere. So even if there is a car, its usually some idiot revving next to me in bumper to bumper traffic. But man, that made me want to just drive around all day after that looking for trouble...hehe. When i got in to the office i looked those AMGs up, man those things are nasty! Really fast sedan. And then i woke up, what a dream................. |

If he were modded... it wouldn't have been pretty, even with the weight.

His may have those e55 failing ic pump common problem ... Lol
Have one in my garage , but yeah ... Since your car is almost 400whp and almost half of the e55 weight , it's pretty much self explainatory .... But if it's modded, I think it'll be a different story. It's a torque monster , really hard to get any tractions , tires spins super easy mine has 285 pss on the rear , lightly modded ...pulley, ic pump, full exhaust

I've been in cars with both motors, and they're both beasts, just in different ways. But one thing that always seemed inaccurate was that a lot of reviewers would say that the 63s lacked torque, but that's not the case. It just didn't have the crazy torque (in terms of both peak torque and the torque curve) that the 55s had, but it was still VERY solid, as its various applications had peaks ranging from ~430 to ~480 lb-ft... definitely not what I'd consider lacking, especially when you compare it to what its direct competitors had in ANY class at those times. It was really just one motor in nearly all of Mercedes' lineup going against different motors in different segments (i.e. M3's 4.0-liter V-8, M5's 5.0-liter V-10, Lexus' 5.0-liter V-8, Audi's 4.2-liter V-8). I have yet to sample the new 63s though, with the twin-turbos. And it's ironic, because now reviewers talk about how massive its torque curves are while saying that they miss the old 63's top end... MAKE UP YOUR MINDS! |

Pretty sure I know that guy. If so, he was in my run group down at Roebling Road at a track event a few years ago. Car was fast as hell down the straights. 145 which actually isn't impressive for a car with that much power at that track, but it was impressive because he had to lift every lap on the straight when passing by the sound meter, lol. Aftermarket headers with stock mufflers and that thing sounded so damn nasty. This was when I had my S2000. He'd dust me on the main straight but I'd reel him in the rest of the lap in the twisties. Fun memories, hehe. ![]() Also he may have mentioned that he hit an indicated 193 mph one night on a long road, not public of course.

But stock E55 aren't super quick, they trap around 113-115 IIRC. Must be a nice long road if you're getting into 6th

At the last Cars & Coffee I attended there was an E63...with an aftermarket supercharger. At first i thought it was an E55, then did a double take after noticing the fender badging that said "6.3". I didn't see the owner, but I'd guess that car was putting out at least 650 hp.

I'd imagine the low trap speed is due to traction issues...... putting 510+ ft/tq with MC endless power band = wheel spin and then some more wheel spin
