How to free transmission from engine
So I'm currently under my frs trying everything I can to get this damn gear box out. All hardware is out but I'm thinking the two steel dowel pins are holding the bastard together. Anyone have any tips?

Probably not level. The engine mounts are super soft so I had to use two jacks to get the angle right the first time.

I haven't done it on my 86 yet but on some other cars I've worked on there was been slots you can get a large flat blade screw driver in to lever it apart. Is there a thread in the DIY section on this?

There is a diy but it doesn't mention the pain of separating the two. I ended up using map gas to heat the dowel area, then route a pry bar in from the wheel well to press apart the two right next to the dowel areas. If you do it down there you avoid marring up the aluminum where it's visible from the engine bay. Worth the extra effort as compared to prying from up top I think! Just whack the pry bar a few times with a heavy hammer and it'll come apart.

lol reminds me of pulling my old EJ series motor in my saabaru for sti swap. I fought that sonofabitch for a couple hours... ended up getting a small flat headed screwdriver and lightliy hammering it in between the block and the bell housing, then stepping up in sizes until I could get a large crowbar on it.
I pulled the 86's trans a few months ago too, and it came apart like a whores legs Last edited by VacantSky; 08-20-2014 at 12:29 AM. |
