Exhaust? Thoughts?
First all, I am a 2013 Subaru BRZ Owner, it had 8k miles and I am loving it. However, this is my first car that I've ever had any desire to do certain things to it. The 2 previous cars I've owned had tons of miles, and just junk cars to get me to Point A to Point B.
I've wanted to customize the car a bit; the first thing I want is a new Exhaust, preferably deeper sounding, catback, and the best value (I'm a baller on a budget now). I am curious to your opinions on this EXHAUST Seems to good to be true for the price. What do ya'll think? Also, does anyone know of a video with this exhaust. I am curious of the sound. Also, found the real source of this Exhaust from a Wholesale seller; same picture..so assuming here it is! Last edited by Whitesoul; 07-07-2014 at 12:39 PM. |

seems too good to be true. Too many good exhausts around to go that route. The berk muffler delete is super cheap and sounds good, check that out if you want cheap gratification. A header and a tune makes the most power per dollar, a muffler delete makes the best sound per dollar and wont have fitment issues and is easy to return to stock.

I would also reccomend the Perrin 2.5", Q300 with a non resonated front pipe for a deeper tone...

I hate to sound so stupid..however; what exactly is a "Tune" is that the normal "Tune Up, aka spark plugs" ...I am assuming not. I've looked it up and didn't really get a ton of information and it was all car speak. I am so brand new cars it's like I'm a baby again... I am terribly sorry for being so uninformed and ignorant of all that. I also read that; it's either Header or Exhaust and can't have both...did I read correct? |

A tune refers to an ECU change that will allow for the optimal timing that uses the extra breathing power a aftermarket header would gain for you. Aka; after making changes to the ECU, the header will net you between 10-15 whp.

first-tune. A tune is when you modify the fuel, ignition and cam timing of the engine. there are many ways to do this but the 86 community has 2 real good options. Ecutek and OFT. Ecutek has a lot more "indepth" options that are not needed unless you're turbo'd OFT is more than capable up to and including that point. Ecutek will require a good tuner and a dyno(ie more money) OFT will not. I recommend OFT for you.
A header is the paert of the exhaust that bolt to the engine and makes the most hp gains, but is technically illegal since it removes the most important catalytic converter. A header and tune will make the most power. OpenFlashTablet plus a header from the same company is about the best HP per dollar around. Our exhaust is more complicated than most cars. It starts with the header that bolts to the engine. The stock header is called and exhaust manifold and has a catalytic converter in it so its technically illegal to remove but most of us do anyway. Then it feeds into the overpipe. This section goes OVER the front subframe. There is a lot of marketing hype about this part. The factory pipe is 2.1 inches and most aftermarket ones are 2.5 some are 3 inch but they usualy hit something in there. Fullblown made 600hp with a turbo on the factory overpipe. Then it feeds into the frontpipe. This connects the overpipe to the exhaust and has a cat/resonator thing in it and is a little restrictive. Eliminating it makes some noise so most aftermarket front pipes have either a cat or a resonator in it. Then we get into the "cat back" section of the exhaust. I think the stock one is 2.25. Its just a straightish pipe so it doesn't flow too awfully bad until you get to the stock muffler. Some people just replace the muffler section with either an axle back or a muffler delete. Muffler deletes work ok at producing power but sound pretty good as long as you don't upgrade too much else. If you start changing the front pipe and the header now it gets loud since you've removed all the cats and resonators/muffflers. You really need too look at this exhaust with a long term goal. The muffler deletes are great for the money and headers make good power for the money. But combine them and it gets noisy. But if you do a header and a completer exhaust system it works together better.

If you buy a full cat back (everything after the catalytic converter)..it is mostly sound change. If you get a muffler delete, this changes the sound again. If you get a header back... you do gain some horsepower... this removes the cat. If you change out the headers and do a header back and a tune... this is probably your most gains. If you change the exhaust tips nothing happens to the sound. Just cosmetics. A tune will increase hp regardless . This case is a basic tune and you can do it yourself with a OFT. If you get forced induction, you'll need a shop's help.

In order 1. Header 2. Overpipe 3. Frontpipe 3a. (2-3 Commonly combined to be called a downpipe). 4. Midpipe 5.muffler 6. Exhaust tips 6a. (4-6 is also the components within a catback). Catbacks do nothing for power, it's just sound. It's all in the header. You will need a tune to fully utilize the benifits of it. You would be able to tune it yourself if you got the Open Face Tablet and Open Face Header combo, which a lot of people on here love. Otherwise yes tuning would need to be done at a local shop

so much for all the Information. I appreciate it. Since a header removes the Cat Converter; how does this take part with smog and engine light? I live in Nevada, Las Vegas? I wouldn't mind a bit of power with some good noise for decent dollar. Really on a budget, I know I should have money to throw at the car; just not a lot at the moment... I also don't want to get into too much trouble. I do live in a Gated Community so I don't want anyone shooting me if I wake them up! Haha Also, with a tune? Does it last forever? Every 20k or 50k miles? I am reading about a tune now on a website ! |

IMO If i were you, ballin on a budget had to deal with smog checks, and warranty is important to keep. I would go with 1. Stock exhaust manifold 2. After market Resonated Front pipe 3. berk muffler delete option (if you research youtube videos and its not the sound you want) or 4. A catback exhaust. (ft86speedfactory v1,v2 theses actually have lifetime warranties so thats a nice factor and are very low priced, q300, there a couple others sub 700) also asking a local exhaust shop nearby will probably be one of your better options also. of course this is more of a sound option, not much power to gain.

A tune changes the programming of the ECU. It should last forever unless it gets corrupted. I work in corporate.... im hesitant to get a muffler delete or a Invidia N1 Lolololol. I might just get a q300 or just jdm tips

Yeah; it looks like a tune would be $300 for me here in Las Vegas; unless I found someone to do it for me and threw them $100-$200 or so for it. The actual kit though is $500; tempting cause then I could do it myself; but knowing me I would mess it up.
Yeah...I'm personally thinking now a Catback Exhaust system with a Tune. Geez if I was rich..I wouldn't know what to do with this car haha..SOMEDAY once again. You guys are an amazing community.
