Dot legal taillights

Has anyone had a problem with taillights that are not dot approved? Thinking about getting the USDM Toms but I don't want them to be a problem with cops or inspection. I live in New York not sure if it's different in different states.

I have DOT approved Toms, but have never heard of anyone with non-DOT approved having issues. Kind of like tint. It's gonna take a bored/new cop to pull you over for them.
