My oil smells like fuel
I was checking my oil level today and I noticed that the oil smelled like fuel. It was also light brownish-green in color. I don't think it's coolant because I'm not losing any. The fuel I am using is blue so that could explain the brownish-green color of the oil. It smells like the blowby oil/fuel I am catching i my Radium catch can.
When I checked the oil in my other car, which is also running the same brand oil and viscosity (5w30 synthetic) and has run roughly the same mileage (1,000 miles) it was medium to dark brown in color and smelled like regular used oil. My mods are Vortech SC, DW 700cc injectors, DW65c fuel pump. According to my AEM wideband gauge, AFR drops to 10.7 then ends at 11.3 at redline when I go WOT. I also read that direct injection engines are notorious for fuel dillution in oil. What are your thoughts? |

Before you changed the oil, when was the last time you drove the car?
Some people let the car idle to somewhat warm before changing oil, which leads to fuel in oil. If you drive the car around, let it get full warmed up and then change the oil, the amount of fuel should lessen. That's my experience with other cars, not so sure if it's true for this car.

Blue fuel? What fuel are you using? I know with E85 and Meth systems on the cobra because of the shere quantity being used, it gets in the oil faster. At least this was what was said on svtperformance. E85 guys always went with a touch thicker oil than stock and changed it more often. Then again, I don't personally have any experience with this, just what I read.

Here's a photo of the oil from the dipstick. On the left is the sample from my other car (BMW M54 engine) and on the right is the one from my 86. Both oils are the same brand and viscosity and roughly the same mileage on them

Some couriers will try and say oil samples are hazardous waste. Its not true.

Is the car mostly used for short trips with no highway driving? usually if you drive the car for something like a half hour on the highway at temperature it'll evaporate and burn up all the fuel in your oil through the PCV. It's probably just making it's way down there in the blowby because you're running so pig ass rich.

I had my oil analyzed. As suspected, fuel was detected. No idea on how much though, the lab said they don't have the equipment to detect it.
Wear metals are low except for Silicon which is 90 ppm. Flashpoint less than 172C (341F) probably becuase of fuel dillution. No idea why TBN is at 11.1 |
