BRZ headunit in an FRS?
Been looking at the FRS for awhile and looks like I'll be picking it up in the near future, but the lack of satellite radio really stinks. And I don't really want the BRZ because there is no Subaru dealer in my area.
So I'm wondering if the Subaru headunit would be plug and play or would there some modifications involved? |

Toyota dealer should be able to work on your brz if that's your concern. Also, you can get the BRZ for cheaper than the FRS right now...

Thats not my main concern. I just don't really want to drive 120 miles to San Diego or Palm Springs because none of the dealers there seem to have an AT BRZ that I want. Theres already a Raven FRS AT at the Toyota dealer near my house that I really like. Plus the dealer offered me an awesome deal on my truck.

Well, it will probably take you about 4 hrs to retrofit the BRZ radio into your FRS if it's your first time doing it. Wiring the satellite and GPS antennas and all require a bit of trim removal. If all you want is navi and satellite radio, just get an aftermarket HU. If all the other features of the BRZ interest you, make the 4hr round trip drive. Just my .02

I think the answer to your original question is that the BRZ headunit has the same connections on the back as the FRS bespoke head unit except the FRS doesn't have the GPS/satellite radio antennas, so you'd need to install these.

Why not a Subaru dealer that will trade their stock for the car you want.

or.. if your going to swap radios anyways.. look aftermarket? doesn't answer your original question I know, and therefore is off topic per se. but from brz owners I have talked to, the after markets (with gps) are better for the bucks.
edit: drunk spell check

BRZ HU is completely plug and play in the FR-S including the GPS, I would know since I just installed mine in a friend's FR-S. If you just take out the included GPS antenna bracket from the BRZ and attach it to the same location in the FR-S using the same 2 screws (really easy and should go wherever the BRZ HU is going, so don't get one that doesn't have it included). Sat radio, however, is another story, as the BRZ sat radio ant is up top on the roof inside the black antenna box.
But to be honest, you are better off with an aftermarket HU, I upgraded to the Ca-Fi unit mentioned in another thread here, it takes a bit more work with the wiring/adapters to get everything working great, but is really quite easy (especially compared to wiring a Sat Radio antenna), and there's enough info in that thread that you should be able to figure it out even if you've never done something like that before. It's well worth it, I love my new HU more than anything I've used before, using Waze, Pandora, and 256gb of songs through Poweramp on a road trip is truly a great experience! Go Sox! |
