Cross country, drive or transport
---back ground story no one cares about---
I am in the military stationed in North Carolina. I have a 3-4 month class coming up in august. The military will not pay for me to get my car out there. But I don't see my life without my FRS. I want to bring my car out there. I have tried searching forum vendors for a shipping company and when I use search all I find is avoid accelerated and fa20club bashing. If I'm over looking something please send a link. ----question---- I'm looking at $1100 to ship it to CA from NC. Then $700 from CA back to NC. Or driving there. I've never done a drive longer then 13 hrs. (On a 2013 zx6r) (8hrs in a car, pt cruiser). Any suggestions or tips on cross country driving in general and cross country driving with a FRS. Thank you for your help. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Active navy here, just made a trip from Oklahoma to florida then back all the way to cali... I would say make the drive, for two reasons:
1. it really sucks being TAD without a car 2. more importantly, if you drive your own car the military will take the money from your plan ticket and give it to you to travel, that way not only are you saving money on the shipping, you will actually make alittle money if you are good with your money on the trip. For some reason I am thinking that you are air force, just because you are in the carolinas, so things might be alittle different between the branches but I don't think so. Just out of curiosity what part of cali will you be in?

being in the marines it should be same as navy, you being our sister branch and all, joking. another perk of having you car out there is there is really nothing to do in that area, so you could take the weekends to go to the la area or san diego area. Or come to some of the frs meets.

Frs meets would be awesome. Yeah I was there for 8 months before when I was a boot at comm school. So I know the area. 45$ taxi ride to get to a crappy town to take a bus to Palm Springs and same on the way back.

you'll save a lot of money just driving and stopping half way to spend the night, I can't recommend a specific route, but that's what I would do

Just so you know its a 4-day drive. It's a big&$$ country!
Actually if you have not done it before you should take some extra time (like a week or 10 days) and enjoy some sights along the way. There are some fabulous National Parks for example. |
