Question for A/T owners on shift cover.

When you look at the cover that has the gear indicators on it, if you look above Park (towards the dash), there is a small rubber plug. If you take the cover off and look from underneath, it looks like there is a place for a switch or pushbutton that would project through the opening if that plug wasn't there.
Does anybody know what it was supposed to be for?

That seems reasonable. How do you know that?

if u remove the cover its just a hole i assume? if so its a shift release, so if ur battery dies u take a small screwdriver or example, push it in there and then u can shift the car and move it

That's button is in the exact same place on 99% of cars. I had to replace that cover on my camry and the part was over drive override cover. It covers a small button

That should be the interlock override.. If your some reason.. The electronic stop that keeps you from moving the selector gets stuck or won't operate.. You can stick a flat edge in there and put the car in gear..

I'll have to look again. From underneath it didn't look like there was anything there.

There is a large square button below it. I held it down with the motor off and was able to move the shift lever.
