Question for auto FR-S/BRZ owners

I forgot to check this out on my AT drive - could someone with an auto answer this?:

You are in full manual mode, and you are humming along in say 4th gear, and then slow down and stop at a red light without touching the paddles. Does the system put you back in first when you then get on the gas or do you have to "paddle down" 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 before you can accelerate? (I hope not, that would make using the auto tranny in manual mode a real PITA if you are not interested in blipping the throttle/engine braking all the time.)

If it's anything like the new SE camry, which i believe it is(the paddleshift part)also similar part to that of the LFA... It will not put it into first gear for you.

the Camry actually does put the car in first gear just like the is350 it just doesn't show it. The gear shifter indicator light just shows/limits the maximum gear. Meaning if you press the paddle up to 4 and you come to a stop it will still show 4 but it will be in first. Then if you try and accelerate up to say around 50mph it will hold 4th gear until you decide to either shift or hit red line.

Tried it this morning. In both standard Manual and Sport mode, it does eventually downshift without intervention, one gear at a time. It stayed in 4th until I got down into the mid to low 20s then switched to 3rd, 2nd and then 1st as I stopped.

By the way, while in 4th gear at under 30MPH I had a MPG indication of >400 when holding a steady speed.

Didn't try it with all the nannies turned completely off. I'll do that later if I have a chance.

Big thanks Dadhawk, useful input into my transmission choice, it was what I was hoping to hear.

I wasn't aware there is a difference between standard manual and sport manual modes - what is it?

Probably want to read Moto-Ps thread on the subject, he has much more detail (including track time) than I can relay. Basically though the difference is Sport is more aggressive and doesn't upshift for you. I'm able to chirp the wheels in sports mode.

Hmm - a little confused by this, I assumed standard manual mode meant just that, no upshifting. I will check out his thread, tx.

No it does not upshift. It does downshift in manual.
