Are Grillcraft grill replacements bad for Aero?
Greetings everyone. I'm trying to plan out some appearance mods for the FRS. These grillcraft grill replacements really caught my eye.
However, as i was thinking about how i would mount my laser jammer heads and looking over the pics it occured to me that opening up the grill in the area that is solid plastic from the factory could create a mess of the airfllow. Either causing drag / turbulence or hurting air flow through the rad. Opinions? Thoughts? I guess if the exposure of the bumper beam area is undesirable from an aero perspective, I could make an abs or coroplast insert to go behind the grill and block off the same area as the factory plastic piece.

I agree as well, the silver is fugly. The black on asphalt doesn't look bad in my opinion though, and is an improvement over stock, except for that exposed bumper foam area.
If i go this route i will probably do a thin black abs block off behind the grill at the top and mount my jammer heads through it and possibly hide some hella pencil beam driving lights behind the grill in that area as well.

If there are better looking options I'd love to see them... dark grill on asphalt.

This is the only factory car where I am completely satisfied with the oem grill and will not do any modifications, I think the stock mesh material looks 1000x better than the grillcraft, I have had past experience with grillcraft though and their fit/finish/quality is impeccable, the grill I had on my truck lasted 6 years with no chips or fading

i like it, it seems like a nice addition, plus the smaller debris wont hit my radiator, the stock grill has too big of openings

The smaller mesh could/should reduce the cooling drag. Hard to say 100%, without a tunnel, or CFD. Reduction in cooling drag, although good for car aero, can raise engine temps, so you have to consider that too.
I run a "gutter screen" behind my BRZ grill, and it keeps the crap off the radiator, and I have had no temp issues. |
