Best Cat-less Frontpipe?

I've been wanting to enhance the rumble on my 86 for a while but without changing the exhaust because a) I'm pretty happy with the look of the stock exhaust b) I don't have the budget to spend on it.

I've asked a local workshop that specialises in all Japanese car mods, and they said they could replace one of the frontpipes with a cat-less frontpipe for $600 in total. According to them, it will still be legal since the 86 has two of them.

Here's what they wrote to me:
"The best option to gain what you are after is to change to one of the custom over pipe's and a blitz cat-less front pipe which we can supply both for $600 installed."

At the moment they've only got one Blitz cat-less frontpipe in stock, but I could order any part I want from them.
I've seen the brand Invidia pop up a lot more on the internet so I'm leaning towards that a little more.

Is there a major difference between them or is the just the sound that they make?

Also, I know very little about this whole process so if someone could provide a brief explanation on how it works, that would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

$600 seems a bit high for a front pipe and over pipe. how much is the labor theyre charging?

and a front pipe and overpipe isn't really the most cost effective way to make more noise. i recommend trying a muffler delete first, its free and will give you a taste of what you really want. i dont recommend running the muffler delete for too long though. get a track pipe if you're satisfied. hot gases and plastic bumper dont mix

Tomei makes the lightest test pipe in titanium! 9 lb weight loss compared to stock.

Some of the front pipes have high flow cats or resonators.

If you want more power, get a header first and then work your way back from there. If you want more sound, start with a axle or cat-back and work forward from there. Changing the expensive overpipe is pointless unless you're changing the entire exhaust system. If you still want to try a catless FP to start there are several to choose from for roughly $200. Lots of choices here:

Nameless 2.5" front pipe + overpipe combo. $400 for the whole thing without a cat.

I take that back, since apparently the Nameless only fits LHD cars. Everything in Australia seems to be expensive compared to the states, at least that's what I remembered when I visited.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

Sorry I should've been more specific, I'm more interested in the rumble/noise than actual performance.

What's wrong with running a muffler delete for too long?

So go ahead with the Frontpipe + Overpipe or nope?

It is an offense to remove any emission control device in Australia.
From http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registrati...s_nov_2007.pdf
"- All emission control equipment must be retained and functional;"

If you get headers you should get it engineered and emission tested at Botany or Penrith RTA.

The "rumble" comes more from an UEL header. The factory header is EL. So if you are strictly looking for that Subaru rumble, don't bother with the front pipe and overpipe. And honestly, the overpipe doesn't really do anything for performance. You are better off with the header and front pipe.

Curious about the Borla cat delete front pipe/overpipe combo. Seems like a good bargain for the price.

Anyone using it, and if so with what other exhaust parts?

Thoughts and feelings about it?

I have the Motiv front pipe with a Greddy SP Elite axle back. Not loud but a great bark and hum under power. Very happy with the result. And the Motiv piece is a work of art!

There are many different front pipes that cost 100-400, and it would only cost 50 to install. Don't get the 600, such a rip off.
