I am planning to get a BRZ in the coming months and have noticed in the endless number of YouTube videos I have watched on the FRS/BRZ that the stock exhaust note isn't that great. I've found this exhaust delete mantioned in this video here:
http://dsportmag.com/showcase/scion-...13-asr-frsmd02 Am I correct when I say all one needs for their exhaust sound to improve like it is in the above video is to change out the exhaust deletes? If this is true, that would just be awesome. |

So the only thing you want to change on the entire car is the exhaust note and that's it?
If it is then sure. If you think you want to change anything else then you might want to do more research. EDIT Advantage: Sound, little more power Disadvantage: Your bumper becomes an aerodynamic parachute at speed

I've heard that replacing the exhaust can add a couple ft lbs of torque and marginal amounts of horsepower. Is that worth spending an extra $800-1000?
Edit: So adding an aftermarket exhaust generally makes the aerodynamics of the car worse? |

Before I say anything else I will say what I have said in most other exhaust threads that I've posted in: Concerning the exhaust as a whole unit, start modifying it at the engine side and move back from there. You will see most gains and change with your header, then op/fp, then catback or axleback.
Most people say that the most effective power mod right off the bat for this car is headers and a tune. Now for just an axle or catback: it depends and its debatable it depends on how much of a gaping hole the exhaust you want leaves under the car. Stock muffler is pretty big. counter arguments are: 1) you'll never see speeds where you notice in daily driving or even autocross. 2) Lighter weight and mo powa outweighs the aero problem. 3) Aftermarket exhaust XXX took it into consideration and their muffler also acts as a diffuser (so says Nvidia for the q300, borla has a diffuser that comes with their catback but really who knows? no wind tunnel testing has happened). my current setup: borla header, nameless catted op/fp with helmholtz, stock cat back... sound is great, not too loud but I know its there and I have the good ole Subaru boxer rumble. Helmholtz stops any rasp that would have been there. Edit: I'm not an expert and this is just my opinion. Please do more research on your own as well!

thanks for the advice. When I first get my bRZ I'm going to be focusing mainly on simple aesthetic mods costing in total under $500. Then I just want something that will make the BRZ all the more fun to drive in, this being the exhaust deletes($120). Then I'm planning to save money that I could spend on aftermarket parts for something in the future.(What, I do not know).

You shouldn't be doing an exhaust delete if you plan on upgrading the exhaust past the catback. Just some helpful advice before your car ends up sounding awful.

Disadvantage #2: Your car will be loud as hell and wake up your entire neighborhood in the mornings and make you look like a prick to everyone around you when you drive your car.
Seriously OP, leave the muffler deletes for the track cars and put a real exhaust on your car. The power gains from an exhaust delete are minimal. If you are looking for a place to spend $500 then I'd suggest an open flash tuner. Probably the best $500 you can spend on this car if you don't plan on going forced induction in the very near future (OFT doesn't currently have any FI maps but will in the future). Add a header to your car and run E85 and you'll get 95-98% of the current potential power potential these cars are currently showing on dynos while in NA form for around $1000 total cost. Cat backs might make your car sound louder but they don't do much for horsepower, despite what all those pretty dyno charts on the vendors website may lead you to believe. EDIT: Quote:

It is a little raspy when you're cruising on the highway (I heard). So that depends if you are ok with driving a loud car everyday. The Invidia N1 is great for daily driving if that is what you want.
