6spd MT Can't shift into second with these cold temperatures

Hey guys, for those living in Canada or the northern parts of the US, are any of you having trouble shifting into 2nd or any gear while your car is cold/ warming up? Do you think this a big issue?

Mine does it in the morning, but in that case it's been sitting overnight as well.

I've taken it to the dealer before for this issue and was told "that's how the trans are built and it may or may not loosen up over time."

Hmmm.. Mine does it any time it's cold, so in the morning on the way to work, and then on my way home for lunch. I wonder if a change of fluid would make a difference?

I also have have this problem. My focus SVT was like this also. I found that double clutching on the up shift works till the transmission warms up.

Hope this helps till spring.

Same here, I find if you really firmly throw it in like your bitch it helps, but even then i sometimes hit a wall of resistance, 2nd try works all the time half the time.

The "hard" shift from 1st to 2nd in cold weather is a common problem with the Aisin gear boxes that are installed in the FRS and BRZ. Unfortunately, there's no known cure for this nagging and, in my mind, unacceptable fault.

However, draining and filling the gear box with Redline 75W 85 gear oil will make a HUGE difference. Some people have even reported that it "cured" there shifting problems.

Hope this helps.

My shift into 2nd was notchy like everyone else but about a week or so before Christmas it started to get better and since then it has been much better.

I've got about 10K km on the odometer.

Double clutch. I also get resistance going into first from stops when cold. Double clutch makes it much less noticeable or.

I switched to Redline MTL but still couldn't shift into 2nd on cold (relatively speaking, I'm TN ) mornings. Then I started shifting into 2nd at 3000 rpm, and goes in every time.

Double-clutch and/or throw the gear into neutral first before going into second (let the shifter go into the center of the pattern instead of going straight down from 1 to 2).

Mine too. "Cold" mornings in Las Vegas - less than 50ush degrees. Double clutching works for me as well. She's real sensitive to preferred revs when cold. But I've had this happen on other older cars too, so it didn't worry me.

Yes and no. It happens and it isn't a big issue.

You need a firm shift from 1 to 2 as the gearbox warms up. Only the first few shifts should baulk. After a km or two the synchros warm up.

Shift quality should get much better as miles build up on the gearbox.

I wish that was our coldest weather, been -30C recently, that's -22F for those of you south of the border.

But on topic, I have experienced the same issue. Double clutching saves the tranny until warmed up, but it's still time for a fluid change to synth.
