They want a base model BRZ. Some people don't like the FR-S because its a Scion. And its really not that much cheaper than the BRZ Premium.

There is a stripped Base model BRZ in japan. They want that here in the states.

So does this eliminate the possibility of a TRD Supercharger option? If so, that's highly disappointing.

A big part of the issue here is pricing. Starting at $24,930 with a manual transmission ($26,030 with an automatic) and no factory options available, the FR-S should be a decent seller. Were Scion to add a turbocharger or any other kit, shoppers would be looking at a price tag much closer to $30,000. That’s when people start sentences with “Well, for that much money, I could just get a…” and Scion loses sales. Subaru has a bit more flexibility in pricing because, versus Scion, the brand isn’t so downmarket and has better-off customers.

I love how the article fails to mention that if it comes as a Toyota, the price tag will be right at home, and the fact that nothing in the 30K range will compare to a turbo FR-S, since the base is already called a better car than the 370z. This car has no real competition, Toyota will realize that soon. A turbo version will sell like hot cakes, hell, tuners are already doing it for a reason.

That one line proves the author knows very little about the car beyond a 200HP tag line. Sad. The car is all about so much more.

Any differences are going to be minor, it's not as if the base BRZ is $5k more than the FR-S. Remember the FR-S is about $5K more than the tC, so it's going to be bought by more moneyed (and hence older) folks - the tC's high rates won't be that relevant. And at least up here, the WRX is very expensive to insure, so Subaru products are not immune to high rates.

Although the stripped out model is PERFECT for the tuner who wants to do EVERYTHING to their BRZ, it's still pointless for us average enthusiasts who want a really base car for blasting around in since there's no LSD....and the premium has too many standard features. We'll never be happy.
