rear-ended

Got rear ended by a car this weekend who left indents of this license plate screws and outline. There's also a minor crack at the top of the rear bumper(right under the trunk).

Is it possible to fix this without having to replace the whole bumper - if not, how much is a replacement?

I didn't post a picture 'cause my car is dirty as hell and it's barely visible. I'm trying to decide if I should live with it (he gave me $300 cash upfront). I drive in NYC traffic on a daily basis and TBH, I'm pretty surprised I haven't gotten dinged yet. JUst don't know if it's worth replacing to have dings all over it again from parking.

The bumper is ABS, don't bother trying to fix it. It will never be the same.

Get a new bumper and repaint ($4-500 plus paint?). OR if you can live with it, go for it and enjoy the $300

Only $300? I hope that at least covers your deductible, but I know most people don't go that low.

$300 is way too low.

i've been in similar situation, with much smaller damage
i got $500 out of it, which for me was ok.

$300 isn't even going to pay for a repair, if you can even repair the damage.

If it's the other guy's fault I don't think there's a deductible to pay.

As far as paying to repair, 300 will not cover.. bumpers are min 750-1k to replace/repaint. and they will never pull an OEM bumper for you -- always aftermarket.

I was recently *lightly* tapped. OEM bumper, OEM reverse light, and a repaint (and various other little bits to go with it) was about $1300 in repairs. Subtract $250 for the light, and you still have over $1k in damages still.

$300 was way too low for it to get fixed.

yea got his info - does your repair include replacing or just repair? don't know if I'm even gonna bother repairing it. I feel like if I get a brand new bumper, there's a pretty high chance of others playing bumper cars while parking anyways and the bumper to bumper traffic isn't cool either. Thanks NYC!

I'm pretty sure the $300 was to avoid going through insurance for the person at fault. There's no difference between how a hit-and-run and a no-fault insurance claim is handled. The only difference is the deductible, hence me saying that hopefully the $300 will cover the deductible. If not, hopefully our fellow 86'er will give the $300 back and go through insurance legit, or have the other person make up the difference for the deductible and claim it as a hit-an-run.

Personally, I would do it legit and never take a cash payment.

Dang, jarviz ...... that's a shame ....

Oh, I'd suggest you wait till spring and after its spring bath & wax, if it still bothers you ..... get it fixed. Sometimes minor scrapes ..... just go away (at least in your mind .... ).

$750 didn't include replacement of bumper cover - was through a small local bodyshop willing to do repair. Bumper cover replacement and associated work through dealer recommended shop was $1300+. This was on a Miata.

Cost can be much more or less depending on paint work required.

Just wanted to clarify - the part of the rear-end that is most damaged right now is that piece of fake carbon fiber plastic that sits between the bumper and our exhaust pipes.

Is that part replaceable by itself or does the whole bumper need to be replaced all at once.

If you street park in NY I wouldn't bother replacing it.
