Insurance

Now that VINs are starting to come in, has anyone been able to get a quote for both an FR-S and a BRZ for the same driver (and ideally compare it to whatever you're driving/paying now)?

I've put in a few requests but nothing is in the broker system yet...

That's a good question. I have to take off for work again but I will see if my wife has time to get a quote for me based off the VIN I have. I'll post here when I know.

The things I do for you guys!

I had my wife phone an insurance place to get a quote but she wasn't able to. They wouldn't even take the VIN #. The person she talked to said there are no 2013 Subaru's in the ICBC system yet.

Hope this helps. Now I'm really late for work so I need to get going. :P

AMA figured the BRZ would be the same as the 2013 WRX, but didn't know for sure.

Who's AMA? American Medical Association?

I sure hope they are wrong, WRX insurance must be a ball-buster.

Hopefully it'll be slightly cheaper since it has back seats... Kinda. Not stopping me from buying the car, but ever bit helps...

I'm hoping the low displacement and low HP keeps the rate down. WRX would be pretty brutal (but at least not horrific STI or EVO rates).

AMA is Alberta Motor Association - they do insurance as well...

I'd be surprised if the Insurance is as much as a WRX (what i own now).

The engine is smaller, the car is WAY lighter, and is cheaper(slightlly). However, the intangible Data that also affects rates like Drivers habits, theft, vandalism, accidents/write-offs, won't exist for this car for a while.

I'd expect to see something in the mx-5 Range.

That being said I Would not be surprised to see insurance rates RISE as the car ages a little and more data is collected for it.

Just to throw some doubt out there to prove you won't know till you insure it....
an '11 Subaru STI, to insure in with ICBC with $500 deductibles and 1 million basic, was roughly $3400 a year - Compare that to a '11 Mistubishi Evolution, arguably no 2 other cars on the planet more alike. Insurance quoted for that car when i looked at the same time, was $4700 per year for the same deductibles. It helps that the evo had a MSRP like $10,000 higher than the STi, but still, that's a huge difference

OMG those rates are BRUTAL, I hope you are 20 years old! When I got a quote on a new Miata, it was actually less than what I am currently paying for a 13 year old Tiburon.

Hard to compare people living in different cities. Vancouver and Toronto might be closer but I imagine the rates differ quite a bit between Toronto, ON and Bucktooth, SK.

AMA is a division of CAA, which I think operates in different provinces under different names.

AMA said the rate primarily depends on the value of the car and the cost and availability of its parts, which they figured would be WRX-like. If it's not more than what I pay for my 06 WRX then it's cool, though that's probably cheaper than a 13 WRX.

Hmmm. So if they really mark up the BRZ here the way they do the WRX, it will be in the low 30's - not only will it be a total ripoff but your insurance rates will be a few 100 a year more than if you bought an FRS for around 25K (group buy). Sounds like I am making the right choice.
