Best/Cheapest snow tires/wheels

Hey,

Anyone care to share with me what they feel is the cheapest and best set of snow tires mounted on wheels? I am hoping to preserve my OE rims so would need this tires mounted on something cheap.

I am not looking for performance during the winter.. I am only looking to keep myself from sliding off the road. I want to do this cheap because I have other mods for this car in mind

i would say do not skimp on quality when it comes to winter tires, my personal favorite are blizzak lm-60s definitely not the cheapest or the longest lasting but great traction in all winter conditions i ran them on my s2000 for a long time.

if your looking to get out of snow and seeing you live in Mass where you def get more snow than me in NY then you need something that offers better deep snow traction... if your not looking for performance than you dont need something like the blizzaks lm60s that offer just that... do your research and look at winter tire tests... i use the General Altimax Arctic's and i love them , keeps me on the road and helps me get out of deep snow spots when i need them too... the dry traction sucks ass but im not going 80mph on the highway with these hhaha 60mph tops and they are only on for about 3 months or so

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7's are the best winter tires I have ever had. Way quieter than the Hankook Ipikes I had last winter.

For cheap, you could try 16" Minerva, Multi-Mile, Hercules, or Sailun tires on cheap 16" steel.

Tirerack has 16" steelies for us at $58 per. Then go to vulcan tire and look up tires for 205/55/16. They are called Jinyu YW51 and come in at $61 per. Winter setup for under $500 bones

I had General Altimax Arctic on my last car and they were a great inexpensive winter tire, Blizzak WS's are better on ice though but the Generals aren't as soft so they handle a bit better.

The Altimax is a great winter tire imo, especially if you are on a budget. I've got them as a budget tire on an old civic and loved them so much they are now on all my cars. Their tech is a bit old, so they don't have some of the ice benefits of the Blizzaks but for light/med/heavy snow they are great.

A 215/45/17 set of 4 goes for $456 on Tire Rack, the Blizzaks WS-70 are $568, so there is a noticeable price difference.

does it do legit damage to the longevity of your wheel if you change the wheels/rims the tire is on to a different pair each season? Maybe i can buy new tires and rims for the summer season and just use my stock rims for the winter season

In a BRZ/FR-S size, Michelin Xi2/Xi3 aren't too expensive and will keep you safer on the ice/snow. Another cheap and good option: Conti EWC. They are under $100 a tire on tirerack in 205/55/16. Stay away from "performance winter" tires, they don't give you much edge on ice/snow. I'd also avoid the Altimaxes. For only a few bucks more you can get Conti EWC, which is far superior winter tire.

Good for those of us that get cold winters with little precipitation where staying on summer tires would be dumb. *cough* me *cough*

They're a perfectly legitimate tire category for cold weather when you want to run a dedicated season tire and what you get is rain/slush.

That depends. They are massively better than a performance summer tire is in the snow, and a bit better than an all season as well. They're also substantially better than a full winter tire for dry roads. So, if you normally run something like a Pilot Super Sport/Conti ExtremeContact/any other tire which is useless in the cold/snow, but you don't live someplace that gets a ton of snow in the winter, they could be a great category to consider.

He explicitly said he needs tires not to slide off the road. Which I read as concerns about ice.

Performance winter is an okay winter tire, if you can stay at home when the worst weather hits.
For the record, I do have performance winters on now. They are okay for limping home safely in an STI. In a BRZ you won't be able to get going in them on ice.
