FRS/BRZ vs Mazda RX8

FRS or BRZ versus Mazda RX8...
Or I guess you could say... Boxer versus Rotary...

and GO!

Drove my friend's RX-8 and it feels really nice. The handling isn't as good as the twins but overall it feels sporty.

Cliff notes:
- RX-8 has the rotary engine. Like it or hate, for every rotary that goes 100K miles there are two that don't make it to 50K miles.
- Having owned 3 RX-7's you have to be prepared to feed these engines oil constantly. Especially if you drive them hard.
- Gas mileage is really poor for a lightweight sub 300hp car compared to the competition.
- Better legroom in the RX8 for the rear passengers. Although, let's be honest, if you plan on driving with people in the back a lot in either of these cars, get a hatchback.
- Personally I find the RX8 styling to be all over the place on the exterior. While it is not unattractive, I personally don't love it either.

Both are great handling cars that are a blast to drive. When the RX8 was first released, I had my name on a waiting list and was ready to pay cash for one.. I test drove it.. I just did not love it for many of the reasons mentioned above.

I've owned an Rx8 in the past and I loved it. I definitely pulled stronger throughout the powerband and got terrible gas mileage. Rx8 handled great but the 86 feels better; although, the 4 doors on the Rx8 was very handy.

I sold it to a friend and he had the motor replaced under warranty around 90k.

Yes, Mazda did extend the warranty on the engine and they are pretty good about taking care of you.

I never liked the four door concept on a sports car. It just feels wrong. But there is no question the RX-8 is much better suited to actually fit real adults in the backseat.

I sold the RX8 when it was first released. I originally felt the same way, but then I opened my mind to a new concept... Free your mind and engineering has no bounds!

my sister had an automatic one a handful of years ago, several times it needed a dealer tow because it wasnt shut off right or something (apparently this was corrected at some point?)

the best thing she ever did with the car was put it into a tree.

not that they don't have a purpose, just was absolutely retarded and inapropriate for her.

Gas mileage was one of the primary reasons why I got the FR-S. The fact that the RX-8 gets horrible mileage is a deal breaker for me. If I was going to get a gas hog, I'd much rather get something with far more hp/tq.

A friend of mine has an RX-8. In terms of everything else, styling/handling/etc, I think the RX-8 is a great car.

Yeah my friend had an RX-8 and the same thing happened to him. What happened is that if you turned the car on and turned it back off without letting the engine COMPLETELY warm up, the engine would flood and it was pretty much toast.
He got it fixed and then a month later, his car was caught in bad weather while parked outside at his work at the bottom of a hill and his entire car flooded this time haha. Needless to say he's moved on from the RX-8's now.
I still love them though and if they come out with the improved rotary, I might even think about trading in the FR-S if I haven't gone FI by then.
