Talking to people with modded cars that are actually clueless

I'm sitting at an exhaust shop right now watching a 2007 mazdaspeed 3 get worked on with its owner. Supposedly its making 470whp. He knows the turbo he has in there and that is quite literally all. He didnt even know his tire size until he bent down to check. I literally wanted to face palm the entire conversation but couldnt walk away because the car was just truly impressive. Anyone else have this experience?

Not first hand, but considering how many people I see on forums that just drop their cars off at shops to get work done, I'm sure it's very common.

There are a lot of people who just want the car to be handled by the shop.
I have few friends who are and aren't like that.

For those friends who are... they're really clueless about their car. I wonder if they know about their engine or the car's capability. When I talk to them about cars, I sometimes feel sorry because they could have saved ton of money by buying parts on their own and DIY..

For those friends who aren't.. save a lot of money because they know what part they're looking for and how to work on it. Having conversation with these friends sometimes educate me for the things that I didn't know.

Go to random car meet and talk to well modified car owners. You can tell right away.

Seeing how old it is how do we know he didn't buy the car second hand? That would explain why he has no clue what was done except for a few things.

I know someone who told me her husband used to spend a shit load of $$$ on his G35, replaced infinity clutches in it and shit. So I asked here where did he race it? She said he only races people at red lights, the guy at the shop drives it on the race track (drag strip)

hah, true, Do you remember in grade school asking people if they saw a movie and they would say yes because they thought they would be a loser if they didn't. Then proceed to laugh at anything you say about whether it was true or not.

I cant stand talking to people like this. I was taking my mom to the grocery store once in my modded SRT-4. I was waiting in my car in front of the store and some guy that worked there came out and told me that he had one too. He started asking me about my mods and what I had done. After I gave him a brief run through he was like "man so you gotta be way over 500hp!?". I was just like nah, just a little over 400. He then proceeded to say things like "well you got the intercooler so thats probably like 40-50hp, the bov is another 20hp, your exhaust got to be atleast 30hp"...etc

Finally my mom came out and I was like yeah... gotta go man.. good talking to ya...

Oh and he mentioned to me that his mods consisted of a "blow out valve" and "custom" fogs he installed radiator cooling ducts on the front of the car (nostrils)
