Looming competition

Recent read in AUTOMOTIVE NEWS, May 6, 2013.

Mark Reuss, General Motors President -North America, has expressed a desire to have "A really nice, light, rear wheel drive sporty car to appeal to young drivers". At the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, GM showed a RWD Chevy coupe referred to as a "Code 130R". The article referred to the Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S that have won "critical praise".

The 130R has not yet been given a 'go-ahead ' as far as I know but for those that find it interesting, it'll be a wait & see.

This would fill out choices in expensive (Corvette), mid-priced (Camaro) and low-priced rear wheel drive cars for Chevrolet and I sure that it would be much better that the now out-of-production Pontiac Solstice.

It kind of looks like a BMW 1 series.

It will be interesting but in general, I think American cars suck.

1. That looks like utter crap.
2. It's an American car made in America.
3. See points 1&2, especially 2.

This is old news. That said, I don't have high hopes for GM in this segment. I can't help but think of the Fiero. Ugh.

Looks heavy... I had rented Camaro a for a week while my eclipse GT was being fix at the time and even though it was the V6 version it was too bulky for my taste. GM isn't know for sporty light cars under 30K.

GM tried this before with the Solstice/Sky, those didn't turn out very competitive.

None of the big three has the automotive DNA for such a project.

The 130R is "meh". The 140S on the other hand is sexy, too bad it's based on the Cruze.

Both examples have a 1.4L turbo at 150hp and 148 torque and 6500 red line, the same as the Cruze. It's still not enough to keep up with a FRS/BRZ. It's just a watered down attempt at a FRS/BRZ.

They aren't building a sports car, but a sporty car with "features" to improve efficiency but not make it any more like a sports car including making it RWD to go after those wanting a RWD.

Yeah....no.

Of all the auto-makers that I would love to see "competition" coming from, GM is pretty much last. Right behind Chrysler.

Don't get me wrong, GM is trying, the new Corvette and the ATS are excellent vehicles. But look how long it took an American automaker to put a good product out there, 3 decades?

This is the company that took decisions such as: killing their EV program in 1998 in favor of more SUVs, the same year that Toyota started theirs (which resulted in the Prius).

It's still long ways for American automakers to catch up in this segment.

This is Meh... but the new 2015 or 2014.5 Mustang could spell major trouble for the twins.

For a long time, neither was Toyota.
