buying salvage twin for track worth it?

Has anyone here ever experience buying a salvage car, repaired enough to just drive and do track and stuff?

Just an idea that I thought of instead of modifying my DD, I rather buy a used or salvage twin for modifications.

It depends on what happened to make it a salvage title. If you have the right person repairing everything and you could snag it for a great price, I would definitely do it. The salvage titles you have to worry about are the ones where owners think they can buy a wrecked car for cheap and fix it themselves without a professional's help. Plus, it'd be badass to have two of these. No one needs to know its salvage.

Provided there wasn't frame damage and the repairs were well done it wouldn't be a bad idea at all. However, you are still going to be paying quite a bit for a salvage titled FR-S or BRZ. I wouldn't expect to pick one up for less than 18k unless you are buying one that still requires significant repair.

You should read the article in the Subaru magazine "Drive Performance" Version 10.2 which has a picture of a photographer standing on a hillside videoing a rally car on the front cover. There is a 5 page article in there from the guys at Mach V Motorsports and what they did to build a track car similar to what you are thinking about. It may be available online, not sure. You can subscribe to several magazines at the Subaru website (I think) not sure if you have to be an owner or not.

Here ya go!! http://dp.subaru.com/dp10-2_MachV.aspx

Solid replies everyone.

is it possible to have a salvage car and not register with DMV?
If I do decide to go with this, I plan on putting it on a trailer for track events.

Parts are very hard to find for this car at the moment and the ones available sell for full retail....(supple and demand).....maybe in a few years things would be different.

In most states a salvage car will have a 'Salvage' Title and the car cannot go back on the road until it has a full inspection (just like when you sell a car). If it is for track use only, usually every track has a full tech inspection before you are allowed on track.

Body straight? Suspension mounting points where they should be? Subframes good and mounting in the correct points (not bent etc)...

Then you're pretty much good to go. When making a race car, the body's getting completely stripped, cut, caged and corner balanced.

If I was buying a new-ish car to build into a race car I absolutely would look for a salvage title. Just make sure the key aspects of the frame/body are as they should be.

The even cheaper way to build a race car?... Let someone else build it and then buy it used. Buying a used race car is exponentially cheaper than building one yourself, even after you've "updated it" to fit your needs sanctioning body's regulations.
