I started losing interest after about the second half of 4th stage when all the encounters were basically the same.

It's been a bit overdue; everything after the Purple Shadow races was comparatively dull. The final two races took over a year each in the manga, and then it suddenly has an abrupt 2 chapter ending... Hopefully the movie and such will shed a bit more light, as the manga didn't really give any closure beyond Project D being complete.

It's kind of bummer, but as stated it had to end at some point. At least there is going to be a movie and one in which I don't have to wait 5 years as per the seasons intermission.
