Steering wheel and air bag removal ZC6 (BRZ)/ ZN6 (86)

Before or after removing the airbag tape the backing of the steering wheel. This will ensure that the steering wheel remains centered.

Remove the airbag. Locate the three holes right behind the steering wheel at 3 – 6 – 9 o’clock position. And insert a flat head screwdriver while locating the locking pin and press/push. The airbag will automatically lift up upon adequate pressure to the locking pin. Best to start at the 6 o’clock position.

After removing the air bag, you just need to remove the 6 philips screws and to remove the nut.
Purple circle – holes at 3 – 6 – 9 o’clock position
White circle – I honestly do not know what this is for. But it has to be removed.
Red circle – remove from the cruise control stalk (green circle) before pulling out the steering wheel
Green circle – no need to pull out
Orange circle – unplug before pulling out the steering wheel
Pick circle - 17 mm nut

Tap the steering wheel lightly at the 3 – 6 – 9 – 12 o’clock position to loosen it before pulling out

This is a picture of the steering wheel. For orientation to help blindly locate the pins while the steering wheel is still attached.
Note:
red circles – where the air bag pin spring goes in.
blue line – locking pin
green arrow - push here (with the screwdriver) to unlock

Remove the locking pins and transfer them to the new steering wheel. You can use your fingers to do so. I used a nail removal tool. Remember the proper orientation of the pins.

Re assemble and you are done. Double check all electrical connections are in place.
