Before I bite the bullet - Questions

Hey, first of all, I absolutely love the FR-S and am dying to get a Hot Lava!

That being said, financially speaking, would there be any other car, new or used, I should look at before I dump all my savings into this sexy car? I've got 15k to put down and live in New England so I'm looking at plenty of snow later...

Kind of nervous to spend this much... but it'd be such a sweet birthday present to myself!

You will need snow tires for sure. Are you looking for a RWD sports coupe? The other cars to consider are the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, etc.

If you are fine with FWD, there is the Focus ST, Mazda Speed3, VW GTi, etc.

I would also drive the WRX.

Consider saving up a bit more and buy a used one after the 2014's come out. You might even be able to pay it off?

I would think of it like this.

If i bought the car and the hour after i bought it i crashed it and the total for repairing it is $5000, could i afford to it fix it?

Have fun, but be wise.

The Mazda Miata (MX-5) is the closest thing you'll find to the twins.

Well, except it is a convertible and has no back seat option. If you don't need a backseat and are open to a convertible, the Miata is a great choice, along with a used S2000.

Looked at the Miata, it's too small and feminine in comparison. I realize used is the best bet but with the depreciation around 3k a year, wouldn't it be roughly the same if I bought an 10' car for 18k, and the fr-s at 27k?

Just buy it if you dont mind not having that much space and driving pleasure is your main concern, dont worry about winter, with snow tires you have arguably more fun then in summer. I doubt i am alone in thinking this is the best money i ever spent on a car.

Snow tires for sure.

And just do it, you won't be disappointed. If you're looking for alternatives, the Genesis Coupe is a much heavier, but torque-ier car. That's probably the closest you'll get for current production cars, besides MAYBE a 350/370z. A used Miata, S2000, or even a slightly used 350z/370z would all be comparable in terms of philosophy. Kinda.

Go for it. With 15K down, the payments shouldn't be bad. Bargain for the best rate you can get on the remainder. This car is great in the snow with the right tires. Look for a set of Bridgestone WS-60 or WS-70 tires in a 205/55/16 size, with some cheap steel winter wheels (or a used set of OEM Impreza alloys). I got a LOT of snow last year and ran the WS-60/steel wheel combo with no issues.
